I posted this first in the 80-86 trucks forum. Then I realized it would be better here. Sorry for the double posting.
I want to convert my '85 F-150 4.9L straight-6 from a computer controlled carburation nightmare to an older design.
Buddy of mine at Autozone looked up some parts that he thought should work from a '77 F-150.
Champion Carb, part number 6-862 $84.99
A-1 Distributor, part number 30-2669 $46.29
Wells ignition control module, part number F102 $15.99
I believe I also need the corresponding EGR valve, water temperature controlled vacuum switch, and an ignition coil.
The wires on the ignition module obviously don't match up with anything on the truck, so I'll need some assistance in determining what wire goes where.
Also, will the intake manifold that is on the truck work with the older carb and EGR valve? Or is it the same design that had been used for the past 40 years?
Are the parts listed above acceptable, or are there much better options I should know about?
I could be wrong, but:
What you'r suggesting will most likly work. Have you factored in the price of the cores? I use to get an awful spark knock in my '85, finally disconnected the vaccuum line to the MAP sensor (on the right fender) TFI module seems to perform as well as the older "blue, 2-plug" modules of old.
I have a 1984 that I changed to a non feedback carb. but I left the ignition system alone. I use the vacuum hoses and carb off a 1980 truck and coppied the vac. hose routing from the 1980 truck and used it. the only thing i left hook up was the map sensor . The truck run fine and passed emissions inspection.
Even an '83 4.9L is NON-feedback - you could collect '83 parts and do the swap, but I always recommend EFI! You'll never be sorry you did it!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 30-Nov-02 AT 05:02 PM (EST)]I have an 86 F150 that's Non feedback, non catalyst and non egr... You just have to look in the right places...
The factory EFI is good to a point... It isn't very performance friendly though... I had it on my 82 until I put in what was sold to the guy I got it from as an "EFI Cam".... It wasn't, and it ran like crap... 14" of vacuum at idle doesn not keep the computer happy...
However, throw an aftermarket computer on there, and you're good to go... BTW, Steve, I am unable to view any of the pictures in your gallery.

Go to the webphotos home page & look for "Communities". On that page, find "Search" and put in "stevebyars@onebox.com". That should bring up a link for all my albums, including my 83 Bronco album. If you can't view it that way, then it's a problem with your computer.
