89 ranger 2.3 code 28
I have an 89 4wd ranger with a 2.3 and a 5 spd manual trany and manual transfer case.
Put a computer on the truck. Returned codes:
86 Vacuum regulator EGR (EVR) circuit failure
28 Hard fault loss of tach rt side: Also, Lose of IDM rt side (I do not know what an IDM is)
33 Low EGR flow
98 Hard fault present: Dtk present (FMEM)/EPC circuit fault
Nutshell:
Starts right up, after rpm settles down (1-2 min), check engine lite comes on and tach dies. At this point if you shut it down it will not restart. If you crank it a bit, won't start. If you turn the key on and off 3 times you start to smell Gas, can find no leak. Let the truck set for a while, it starts right up.
Long version:
I got the from the original owner, a mechanic. It has 190,000 on it. Compression in 1, 2, & 4=195, 3=175. It sat for a year before I got it. Pulled passenger plugs, squirted wd40 and into the cylinders, rotated it by hand a few times, let it set over 2 days, drained most of the old gas out and put in 5 gal of new. Squirted more oil in. Did the compression test with old drivers side plugs in with all wires off. Saw good gas squirting on open cylinders. changed all plugs and wires. Changed all fluids. Changed but not filter. Started it up ran fine. Let it run 5 min. shut it down. next day ran it for about 20 min, no problem. Took it for a drive following day, ran like a champ.
Yesterday took it to the dump with a load of trash, check lite came on and the tach just cut out! Check engine lite went out, tach came back on! Check engine lite came on, tach dropped to 0 again but the stayed on this time. still seemed to run fine. Got to the dump, shut it off, couldn't get it started. It felt as if it was wanting to but just couldn't, similar to a carbed vechile that just needs a little gentle goose on the gas pedal. After about half an hour, just before the dump closed and before AAA got to us, I tried it and it fired right up! Got back home (light on tach off), shut it off and tried to start it back up... No luck. Next morning, fired right up.
Thanks for any help
A.J.

dazzleaj is starting off with a positive reputation.
Thumbs up thanks
Checked the wires to the plug of the coil pack. They were twisted and folded against each other. Straightened them and pushed them a little deeper into the back of the clip and it smoothed out a bit and the check engine lite went out, the tach came back on and it starts after shutting it off!!
I will pull the plug and rebuild it or replace it
Thanks
A.J.
