ive been trying to diagnose some probles on a buddys 1990 4.0 auto ranger. It has a 94 explorer motor in it, and i want to try to get codes out of it. Does it have OBD1 or EEC-V? I thought you used a paper clip to get codes out of a OBD1, but the only thing i could find in the engine bay that resembled a diagnostic port said EEC TEST on it. How can i get codes from this? Will I be able to get any codes about the transmission from this? Thanks

 

Ok i figured it out and these were the codes i got

Now 86 and 89 are codes for the trans if i looked them up rigt, and would this explain why my trans wont shift gears unless i let off the gas? Also, i dont ever think it got into 3rd or 4th gear since hes owned it.
Any help would be appreciated

 

If the PCM is still from the '90, then you should be reading two-digit codes only.

 

the pcm might be from the 94 replacement motor, so would that explain the 3 digit codes?

 

A '94 PCM would put out 3-digit codes only.
