Dealer was to swap the AM/FM radio in my '08 F350 XL to the AM/FM/CD/MP3 unit as part of the deal when I bought it. Took it in today, the new radio (I guess from an XLT) wouldn't fit. Tech said the plugs on the back were different. I had an '05 F250 that I did the very same swap on - AM/FM for AM/FM/CD. Plugged right in. Anyway, bottom line they asked if I would take a Sony instead. They are making an appointment for me at a local shop to install one.
Another design change?? Who knows. See the thread about the '08 Upfitter switches for another "design change".
I think the XL's have less speakers then XLT and above that is probaly the reason the radio wont plug in. It should be really easy for them to make a wireing harnis adapter. The shop installing the Sony unit will have to make a wiring harnis adapter for that radio anyway.
Also I would never accept a Sony car radio. I am being honnest when I say I am a Sony fan boy (Playstation 1, 2 & 3, Trinitron TV's are the best, etc. etc.). But Sony makes crap car radios.
I second that on the sony crap radio comment.I owned a couple. That came with the trucks and hated every one of them. From poor design to funtionability while driveing. And I too am A huge fan of any other electronic sony makes.I would never buy a different brand t.v.other than sony.So this is not a bash sony thread.Just my .02
I know the 08 Lariats have tweeters in the little black panels behind where the mirror mounting screws are. Stands to reason that the wiring connections would be a bit different.
They weren't different on the '05. I just spent about a half hour going thru the wiring diagrams for the various 2008 audio units - the base unit, the audiophile unit and the DVD unit all utilize connector C240 for the unit connector. As the units get fancier, it uses more of the pins, and there are more other subunits involved, but the base stereo L/R signals use C240 and the same pin numbers, so I don't see why the am/fm/cd unit won't plug in.............Plan to reopen discussion with the dealer Monday.
I have a 2005, f250 xl, regular cab. It came with the base am/fm radio. I bought a ford am/fm/6 cd radio from a f350 (same year I think). It plugged right in and worked fine. Also, I did not have the rear speakers, but the witing was in place. I just connected to some speakers I bought and all works fine. John
On the '08 XL there are a pair of wires entering the rear door - I ASSUME they are speaker wires - don't think there are any door switches in the rear doors, at least I can't find any on the schematics. Haven't taken the door apart yet. From what I can find out, Ford uses a generic main wiring harness - all the wires in place for all the features for all models- if the feature isn't used the wires just hang. Anyone with different info?
Thanks Alchymist I have an 04 XL f250 that I just upgraded with a cd player i got from storm. Plugged right in. It would be nice if the wire's were already their for the other 2 speaker's
I'm fairly sure someone on here reported finding the speaker wires in the back doors, even though the truck didn't come with rear speakers. Let us know what you find though.
On the pre-08 model trucks, the speaker wire was clipped onto a dummy connector inside the rear cab corner pillar if the truck was not originally equiped with speakers. Don't know about the 08 model trucks though.
