I have a 5.0 93 F-150 4x4 SC, 5spd,short box, 6inch lift. I am needing to do a exhaust system change. The reason for this is a think that one or both the cats or becoming plugged up and i think the second cat has been gutted. I live in SLC Ut so I have to have the emissions test so i cant just remove them.I have been looking at a set of long tube headers for it. When looking on summitracing.com I see that some say they will not fit 5spd 4x4. Is there a brand out there that is made for or better suited for my truck. I am also try to figure out if single 3' would be a better choice then say duel 2.24, or 2.5 inch. I figure the single for the cost of only having to buy 1 cat 1 muffler. Unless there are any duel in/duel out cats out there. Is one set up better than the other (single/duel)? There is not a lot of room between the frame rails for duels i would think. I would want them to exit in front of rear tires just like the way it looks over out the rear. thank you.
The only reason I mentioned that is because 2.5" single pipe seems a wee bit on a small side if you're upgrading.
Depends if you measure with your eyes or a dyno. Monster pipes are all the rage, but the truck 5.0 is just not capable of flowing enough air to properly utilize that much pipe. All you are doing is killing power below 3000rpm where exhaust air velocity helps TQ production. Smaller tubing will have a higher air velocity. It also depends upon the quality of the plumbing. I put a new system on my truck this summer, and all I did was replace some compression bent plumbing with mendrel bent stuff.. same 2 into 1 layout.. 2.5" into 3". The new system definitely flows much better(makes more power), and smoothed out the powerband quite a bit. This is gonna sound like I'm tooting my horn here, but I'm really just trying to prove a point. There's no way your 5.0 makes the TQ and HP my 5.8 makes, and it's a bigger motor with a better cam, ported heads, and less exhaust!!
I'm not just spewing information from nowhere, if that's the impression you're getting. I know all about backpressure and the affect it has on tq/hp. This dual 3" crimped exhaust on my F150 wasn't installed by me and wouldn't have been my choice. Hence the reason I'm bringing it down to 2 1/4 mandrel (although arguably it won't be too much different). I guess It just depends on your goals and what you see in your trucks future. My truck isn't going to be leaving my possession.. ever. It's getting all sorts of goodies this winter.. and many more after that. Although quite a bit more in-depth next winter.
Btw, I never said once that my trucks 5.0 makes what your overhauled 5.8 makes. I'm happy with my 5.0l in my shortbox/reg cab/2wd/5spd. Light as it gets. No problem lighting up the tires with my huge exhaust and 3.08 gears.

And just for the record I wasn't trying to say "mine is bigger than yours".. Just trying to drive home the point that more and bigger exhaust is not necessarily better.
I would say a 3" single is the sweet spot for a 5.0 truck, 2.5 is too small. My friend is running 2.5 all the way back on his dodge dakota 2.5l and he gained a bunch of torque. Myself, I have a 3 inch flowmaster cat back on my 3.0 ranger and I gained a bunch of torque. The size of the exhaust tubing doesnt matter a whole lot when you run long tube headers as all the scavenging takes place in the headers, same reason open long tube headers usually make more power all over than a full exhaust.
run tru duals using flowtech long tubes using high flow cats with 2 chamber flowmasters with no piping after the muffler... sounds nice and i'm basically running the samething except i have no cats and no o2 sensor
