cat question

Iv got a 2v 5.4l. And would love to have a nice sounding exhaust. I understand I won't notice any power gain. I just want the nice sound. I'm looking for deep mildly loud with a little aggressive. Iv been researching on YouTube. I am pretty sure a magniflow dual cat back is what I am interested in. I. Looked into putting a better y pipe in also. I went under the truck to see the old y pipe and discovered there were no cats. Previous owner took them off.
One exhaust shop told me they couldn't fool with the y pipe since the previous owner took the cats off the truck.

My question is, will the magnaflows iv been looking at sound different with no cats? Sound crappier?

Any other exhaust choices I should look at with this configuration? Really not interested in single side exit exhaust. If I was I'd just weld a new muffler in and scratch the duels.

Hope to hear from you guys on this project!

Go to another exhaust shop, I had my Y Pipe put on and mine has no cat. They never even asked or said a word about it. I live in GA though, down here they won't remove a catalytic converter, but they will install a straight pipe in its place if you take it to them already removed.

I am running that same set up on mine, no cat, y-pipe, with magna flow muffler. It is pretty damn loud, and gets raspy if you really put your foot in it.

I plan on putting a high flow converter on soon. It is just at the bottom of my list of things to do right now.

Mine has a leak in it somewhere. You can hear the pop in it. Like I said, it gets pretty raspy, and I plan on replacing my cat with a high flow one here soon.

Thanks for the input. Do you think it would be a lot quieter without the exhaust leak. I am wondering if I should be planning on adding a high flow cat.

The exhaust leak is a pin hole somewhere in the welding. I had my uncles neighbor weld up a straight pipe on it, and I don't think he did that great of a job on it. It would not be any quieter without the pin hole in it.

Once I removed the cat, it instantly was much louder even without it being all the way welded up. I took the cat off in my uncles driveway, fitted the piping, drove to his neighbors driveway and it was noticeably much louder than it was before.

With the Magna flow only it sounded pretty good, I could not hear the exhaust at all inside my truck. Now, there is a drone which is the reason a cat will be going back on it soon.

Can you explain drone noise? I'm pretty sure this is how a lot of keeps sound correct?

As in, it does not go away. It drones in the cab. A harmonic imbalance of sound. Big mud tires have a drone to them when you are driving at highway speeds.

i had a cherry bomb on my 5.4 with a high flowcat, it sounded freakin MEAN! Then after two years that dam exhaust droan, just constant exhaust in the cab that never went away drove me to install a Borla single exit exhaust, kept the high flow cat, and added the ypipe from Mike at Five Star. Now i have a awesome sounding no droan 5.4, and when you stomp on it, it turns heads! But in a good way

it sounded great at idle, and had a high pitch exhaust sound to it, like when i reved it in the video. Around town it was fine, but on the highway it had this droan that only went away if i turned the radio on MAX! Then you just got a headace from the radio and exhaust mixing in your ears. I finally had enough when i pulled my 20ft center consol to Lake George last August, when i got home i ordered the Borla, i miss my old muffler ever day but the niceness of no exhaust in your head ever time im in my truck, is priceless

I could not agree with you more. Although your cherry bombs sounded awesome, I don't think I could live with them every day. I am looking for a much more low key sound no raspyness. If I had a mud truck that was on the farm or something I prolly would go the cheery bomb or glasspack rout. It truly did sound cool as heck. Thanks for adding that.

thanks alot, for a 5.4 it was the best sounding one in my area no truck i heard in person sounded close to being that good. It was that horrible droan on the highway or towing a heavy trailer or my boat that drove me to change it. my current Borla muffler is a straight through muffler just like the cherry bomb but its rounder and it takes that droan out of the exhaust, it sounds great but not over loud

That's cool. I'll be going to the exhaust shop next week to get a cat back put on. I hope they have a borla muffler and a magniflow there to compare. It would be nice to hear a dynomax as well. Just have to see what they have.

Another question... Has anyone just stuck with the aluminized steel comming out under the bumper. Will it look like crap later on?.

I ask this because I really hate Chrome on my truck. So I'm reluctant to add those tips that everyone else has.

The exhaust shop said they do carry black tips for $50 a piece. But I wanted a backup plan encase I hate them.

Ok update.
Went to a local exhaust shop a couple of weeks ago. Told the people there that I was interested in Magnaflow but I didn't have cats on the truck. Also said I wanted a quieter more deep rumble sound. Dude told me I would hate the magniflow because with no cats it would be loud as frig. I was skeptical but I said ok, what do you guys recommend? They said flowmaster 50 series. I told them to put it on. Minutes later they told me they were out of the 50s and they would need to use a 40 series. Guy told me if it was too loud for me, they could put a turbo muffler Where the cats used to be for free. I agreed.

After the flowmaster was on, sure enough it was crazy loud. I ended up having them put the turbo muffler on. But now it is still its a little bit too quiet now lol. I am hoping as the mufflers wear in it sounds just a tad louder but over all I am pleased. Does anyone know of a resonator or something that will quiet a lone flowmaster?

Oh on a side note, I have a mostly black on white truck color scheme going on on my rig. I really didn't want any Chrome tips. The shop had some " black ice " tips. Love them. They are a dark shiny grey. Still shiny like Chrome though.

Oh and black tips were $15 a piece. I misunderstood him on the phone.
