ok, i just got my old carb back today after i waited a week after returning the carb they gave me which was the wrong one.. i replaced all of the belts and while taking off the wrong carb i noticed that there was a hose going from the carb to the exhaust manifold and it was broken and looked like it had been for a while. is this important? and where would i go to get a replacement. for now i just plugged the holes. so hopefully the rain will stop and tomorrow i will be able to get my truck back on the road.. its been sitting for three weeks now...
If you found the tube broke, it probably would contribute to the poor performance of the truck that started this fiasco, but it's not the true source. Since I don't have the '82 handy, as mine is now an inlaw's vehicle, I can't recall if that tube went to the air cleaner top or the top of the carb as a preheater/de-icer...
The second question is pretty simple. The F-100 was the lighter duty of the two. Came with a lower payload and towing capacity from the factory.
The little metal tube is for the choke. You can buy replacement ones at your local auto parts store - check out the "HELP" section. There's aftermarket choke stoves that clamp to the exhaust pipe. It should replace the old tube. You should have it fixed.
In addition to that choke heater tube my 81 also has a tube from the bottom of the exhaust manifold, about the #5 exhaust port location, that goes up to the top of the carb just below where the air cleaner attaches. Is that the de-icer?
No, it's not a heated air source for the air cleaner. The original stock choke setup has a heat chamber of sorts cast into the exhaust manifold. From the top of the carb there's a jet that collects air as it whizes by into the venturi. The jet feeds air into a tube that travels out of the carb and down into the bottom of the heat chamber. from the top of the chamber another tube exits with the now heated air being forced upward back towards the carb, into the choke housing. Ever notice that little brass piece right at the top of the opening of your carb when you lift off the cleaner assembly? -that's the jet I'm talking about. Usually, the jet is capped off with one of those rubber caps.
yea it is basically the same thing as the fuel line as in it was a metal tube that had threaded fittings on it, it looked pretty bad so now i have just crimped the end and plugged the whole in the header but where do i find the help section ,i do want to fix this because im slowly replacing everything because i want this truck to be back to normal and stock the way it should be....
Go into any major part supplier store like Kragen, Autozone...the name depends on where you live. :P There should be a "HELP" section - meaning an area of the store with a bunch of aftermarket doo-dads like window crank handles, dome light covers...you can't miss the red packaging.
Yeah that's the ticket...
Derek, I had always thought that source from under the manifold was a de-icer jobby. Mine had never been plugged.
Sorry about that Marty, that last problem I experienced on my '82 was the tube coming from underneath the exhaust manifold, not the choke heater tube. I replaced the choke heater line several years ago as the brass threads really be came screwed up during one of my carb swaps. I completely forgotten about it... goes to show you how much I enjoyed mine... I forget most of the bad times.
Take the old one or get a rough measurement of the size you need, you'll need a tubing bender to get the right radius and to prevent crushing the tube when you go to bend it.
The auto parts stores around my neck of the woods stock that tube as a brake/fuel line behind the counter. Just incase you can't find it out in the general parts area.
yea i just went to Pep Boys and seen the help area they have a choke tube repair kit and a choke tube kit... so ill probably go get it now. now that i have hit every store in a 30 mile radius looking for the right fuel filter for my truck. i have only drivin this truck once and i have had it for a month and its already nickle and diming me to death.. i bought it for 1100$ and so far have about 300$ in crap that i have bought and days of time..... but i know after i figure everything out i will appreciate it more.
ok heres another question there is a hose coming off the upper half passenger side of the carb and it is just blocked off, it is about a 1/4" hose or around that size what does this go to? im not sure if it was just put on there but it is red in color.
I have an 82 with the same setup. The choke heater tube from the top of the manifold to the choke was bad! I found the parts and replaced this early on. I, in the last month replaced the carb. with a reman. carb. I saw the red rubber hose on the street side of the carb and it attached to a steel tube that went to the under side of the manifold. I found that is had been rusted off at the manifold for a Loooong time!
