After going through every possible transmission i finally made up my mind to put a four speed toploader in my 63'. My question is what are my chances of finding one without dropping $1700 on a brand new one through David Kee. Also has anyone ever used a toploader in one of their projects and if you have how did it work out for you.
? What did these come in stock ? I'd want to find one for a project myself. Having a clue(list) what I might be hunting over thext year would be great...
you could get top loaders in mustang, ranchero, torino, couger were the ones that come to mind. theres also alot of different toploaders wide/close ratio, big input small out, small in small out, big in big out thi big in big out close ratio will be spendy.the run of the mill small in,small out are pretty weak ive broke them with 300 I6's
I'll be looking in the off the beat sources.. not ebay/JY unless I see one in pickyourchit on a 1/2 price weekend.. Thanks for the info, I'll have to do some research so I can identify the tranny via VIN as well as eyeball. Maybe #Dummy will post up some VIN info for the few without a clue..(mîself included) lol
I have a Toploader in my '66, they are tough and make a little bit of gear noise. I like the more usable gear spread compared to the truck 4 speeds. There are a couple pics in my gallery of the trans. You will be able to use the short transmission hump in the cab, the Toploader is not nearly as tall as the truck 4 speed. The shifter is a trouble spot, it normally bolts on too far back for a pickup. I fabbed a bracket and modified the shift handle to suit me.

Check out Kee's site below lots of info on the Toploader and the lineup of imposters
Have you tried a later model pickup transmission? I have a 4 and 5 speed manual transmission, both overdrives. They have a top loaded shifter, and I think it would come out in the floor board at about the same spot as the original shifter. as for a toploader, get ready to shell out the cash, or hide your conscience, find someone who doesn't know what they have, and screw em to the wall. Cuz 500 bucks will be lucky to buy you a core. Check out Kajun John's for manual transmissions and parts.
