Well my 77 F-100 seems to be leaking oil from the rear main seal. Ive seen it run off of the bellhousing before. It only starts once the truck is started and is running for a few mins. But do i have to pull the motor when replacing the seal?? its a 3spd manual on it,2wd
I know this is an older thread, but I have the same issue with my 77 F150 300 I6 2 WD. It has a C4 which I know I have to pull, but do I need to drop the rear main to put this rear seal in? And If I do, does anyone know the torque of the main bolts.
Also, there is 80,163 miles, what are your thoughts on replacing the oil pump while I am in there?
Hi, The seal is a one piece design, similar to the front cover seal.
Drill a small hole in the seal, insert a screw and use it to pull the seal out. Very difficult to install without proper driver but if you are very careful it can be done with a hammer and punch. be sure to drive it in evenly. Lube the lip of the seal.
You can not remove the oil pump without removing the pan so i would not be concerned about that unless you noticed a problem with oil pressure. Be careful with the seal installiation, have done the job many times. Gary
