Sloppy Shifter

I guess I suck at doing searches, because both here and on another forum I cannot find any similiar topics to my problem.

The gear selector lever for my auto tranny (transmission was replaced a little less than 80K miles ago) is real sloppy. There is a wide range of movement in the lever when I am in the various gears.

The truck runs fine with no problems. The actual trans is not slipping or not going into gear, it's just the selector thats sloppy. It's sometimes difficult to tell if I'm in reverse, neutral or drive until I take my foot off of the brake and let the truck start rolling. It almost feels like what ever detent should stop the lever over the PRND21 is not there. This problem just manifested itself overnight without warning.

Thoughts?

Easy fix. Crawl under the dash with your head right next to the brake peddle and look up. reach up and wiggle the shifter with one of your hands and use that motion to locate where it is under the dash. There are 2 torx screws that hold the bracket on and the screws work loose. tighten the loose screws and bang its fixed.

That's awsome! I've been wondering the same thing but haven't took the time to figure it out. I'm going to fix mine tonight.

Things are seldom easy when it comes to me and the truck.

The bolts are tight. Next suggestion?

that is my only guess. Thats what happened to mine anyway. The only other thing i can think of is the connection where the cable connects to the side of the trans. There is a little plastic connector atleast on mine that you can slide a part of it up and move the connector and slide the part up and it locks it in those grooves.. BE VERY CAREFULL when messing with this linkage, block the wheels lock the E-brake bcuz its very easy to bump it out of park. Just make sure that it is not slipping on that connection at the trans if its not there i donno where else to look.

There is a little bit of play in that connector, but not much. I doubt it's the problem.

Someone else has suggested an aluminum tube that the cable runs through, but I'm not finding what he's talking about. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
