I got a new (to me) '00 Exc. It has 56K miles. When I go to change oil in the next few months, what should I use?
- ask the original owner and use the same
- brand X of 5w30
- Motorcraft 5w30 (dealer?)
- brand X of weight Y of synthetic?
I'll be doing it myself, so materials costs is not much of a factor. I'll probably be driving 5-8K per year.
I believe the V-10 requires 5W20 (at least my 01 does). Walmart sells the Ford semi-synthentic 5-20 in a 5 QT bottles for a good price and is my choice.
If u have a v-10, i use 5w20 royal purple syntehtic. I love that oil and for some reasn it ses less during the 3,000 mil interval. I use to be a quart anda half lowe when i used mobil 1 synthetic. Now since i switchd i am usually a half a quart low
vettdvr, why r u using such high oil weights? Do u have the v-10 or the 5.4
I don't have the v10 but in my ford v8's I used the 10w30/40 oils.
Heavy stop and go traffic temps of 100 + a/c on.
The 30w and 40w part adds better valve train lubrication and the cost in fuel consumption is nil. If I lived where winter temps hit 0 or below I would use a 0w-20w in winter.
But that is why I also use synthetic and run oil changes 10,000+ miles. My normal oil change in the Mercedes is 14000 miles and the Corvette changes at 10,000 miles unless track driven.
The cap on the tube that u poour the oil in on mine says 5w20 i dont know why its diff
It's all about CAFE.. The corporate average fuel economy. If you run thin oil better mileage and more cars / trucks can be sold.
You give up lubrication at 5w20 over the conventional 10w30/40 oils.
Before retiring I read the national Lubrication mags. sent to industry. As long as 5w20 will let your engine run the full warranty time it can be used in the engine. But If you really want it to last, consider the 10w30/40 oils.
So it wont harm my engine if i switch from 5w20 to 10w30 next oil change? will it harm Performance? I thought it was bad to switch oil weights.
You might notice higher oil pressure and less oil consumption. Otherwise you won't notice much other than less wear. Consider using the same brand of oil just change the weight. Jim
How long have u been doing this? The reason why i am asking is because i do want my engine to last longer, but i just dont want to take a chance destroying it

89 Lincoln Mark 7 185000 miles 10w30 Mobile 1\
94 F150 175000 son drives it now in Germany 10w40
99 Lincoln sold at 50000 miles 5w20 serviced at dealer used 1 qt every 800 miles. Changed to 10w30 went 2000 miles to a qt.
99 corvette 10w30 70000 miles and just drove it 2000 miles last week uses no oil and driven on race track
00 Excursion but it is diesel 140,000 miles Rotella 10w40 and runs like new no oil consumption at 5000 changes.
Oil used was either Havoline, Motorcraft/Ford, or Mobile 1.
The only car that had an issue and this was from new was the 99 Lincoln using oil. It came w/ 5w20 installed.
Hope this answers how long.
We won't go to the 70 pontiac and 77 Olds bought new. Both went over 200000 miles w/ 10w30 Havoline.
Thanks for the info. I only use a half a quart every 3 k as it is with the royal purple 5w20 syn. So im not worried bout the using of oil. Ill post this down in v-10 land and see how many users are doin this with there v10s
