Dont use 10w30. The people in the v-10 forum say that the 10 weight oil is to thick for the v-10's oil injectors. I would change it more then 2 times a year. When u get it changed at lube stop they say every 3k or 4 months. Atleast that is what it says one there stickers that they put on ur winshield. Ud be fine with 3 times or 4 at the most i think.
Oil lube stores want you in every 3k or 3 months just to make money. This is one of the biggest scams going in the service industry. I guess you can't get to much of a good thing but I would prefer to save my dollars if an oil change is not really needed. Follow the recommendations set forth by the manafacturer and you should be fine.
Im with 1489f1. :-) Don't forget either that both engine technology and oil technology have steadily been improving, so even if a 3000 interval was appropriate back in the day, its certainly overkill now. Intervals of 5000-7500 are probably fine (as long as you check the oil level and top off as some burns off)
amsoil, royal purple and all those specialty oils are just about the same as any good full synthetic IMO . Its all marketing for the most part. I do have friends that swear by them and claim major performance/longevity gains. Then on the opposite end of the spectrum, I also know people who say that plain motocraft dino oil is the best for the engines... I dunno, pick something in either 5w20 or 5w30 and just go with it. :-)
Since the book says 5w30, I guess I'll go with that weight. Some here say their book says 5w20. My oil cap has no markings either.
As for syn or not.. I'd really like to do whatever I can to give the engine an easy 250-300K miles assuming all else does not fall apart by then. My gut is that any auto these days should be able to reach 200K easily with routine care. My 96 Honda Odyssey is at 150K and my 97 F150 is at 140K and both have had minimal non maintenance repair.. rear axle seal on the F150.. that's it.
So wanting to shoot for 300K, I'm inclined to use the best possible oil and perform oil and filter changes conservatively. I'm thinking to change every 5K.. or maybe just spring and fall.. and use Mobil 1 syn. I tend to do both (selling the F150) vehicles at the same time.. so if 5w30 works in both the Exc and the Odyssey.. that's how I'm leaning.
So if I drive 8-10K per year, am I OK just changing oil once per year if I use a syn? And maybe 2x per year with dino?
The interval is typically stated in terms of mileage OR months. Whichever comes first should be your interval.
Be advised that MANY report oil loss with Mobil 1 probably due to evaporation. I know I did with my 2000. Once I went with Motorcraft 5W-30 it stopped. I only use 5W-20 in my 05 with no oil loss during the 5K change intervals.
Use the MC oil and filter and change it per specified intervals and stop sweating the small stuff. I've not heard of an oil related failure on a V10 that had regular changes NO MATTER what the oil brand. Now weight is a different subject... Stick with 5/30 or 5/20.
Your tranny will crap out long before the engine will ever need to be rebuilt due to normal wear. In fact, I'd bet most everything hanging off it will as well.
Sounds like a plan.. since WalMart has the Motorcraft filter & 5w30.. (part syn I think).. I'll use that.
Is there anything wrong w/ Penzoil? I've been using that in my F150 and Honda Odyssey. It was convenient bec. 6 qts in the F150 and 4 in the Honda = 2 jugs.
Just like everyone is saying, no matter what you use just change the fluids on time. Don't be like my brother who went 18K miles on dino oil in his honda(still runs well somehow at 165K). My mechanic has a lot of costumers who drive lincoln town cars for their business. They rack up a ton of miles and a few are already at over 300K miles on dino shell, 20w50. I know that seems thick in the newer lincolns but it sure hasn't hurt them.
Seems like you're going with the mc oil which is perfectly fine.
I have a 2000 V-10 and it does take 5w-30. You can't go wrong with any high grade oil. I've used MC, Valvoline, and Pennzoil, been running Pennzoil for the last 75,000 miles and it has 120,000 on it now.
Just be sure to change it regularly and you will be fine.
I would recomend either AMSOIL or Mobil 1 syn. I've done alot of reading on oils the last few months and from what I've seen these are the best. With the amount of driving you are doing you should only have to change oil every year.
