My 390 is burning oil. The problem is, where is it getting in to get burned. Here are some observations I have acquired to help diagnose my problem:
1--it only burns oil on the right bank.
2--I rev the engine and more smoke comes out as the engine rpms return to idle speed.
3--after revving the engine, it smokes pretty good for a second or two then the smoke lets up.
4--the vacuum reading says a steady 16psi (I also live at 4000 ft)
I would check that the oil drainback holes are clear. I sounds to me like the oil might be building up in the valve cover area and then when you let off the gas the high vacuum in the cylinders sucks oil down the valve guides. Might be able to get away with just replacing the valve stem seals. You might also want to run a compression test on the engine.
There is a chance you have a bad intake manifold gasket. make sure/check the tightness of the intake manifold bolts on the side that is burning oil...IF they are loose you will suck oil into the intake runners. A compression test will look good.. Replace the gasket if the bolts are loose!!

I think John is on the right track, the tip-off is the “one side only.” Usually valve guides, seals and rings all wear out evenly and don’t favor a particular side of the engine. I had this happen on my 428, and it was the right bank too. Oil was being sucked into the intake runners from the bottom-side of the manifold in the lifter valley. Luckily I was able to retorque the manifold and seal it.
