Slightly off the original topic here folks, but has anyone ever heard of a remote start system that can be installed in a standard shift truck? I've heard all the DANGER DANGER stories and understand the risk of having a standard shift truck with an auto-start system. Just curious if anyone has seen it done?
Thanks in advance
I'm not sure how to do it but i would think it would be almost the same system as an auto but you would have to jump the clutch pedal switch but don't leave it in gear otherwise it won't be there when you go out.

I wanted to do it on my 05 Mustang, but no installer would touch it. One installer said that there is a company that makes a device that attaches to the shifter and trany that detects the nuetral position, allowing the car to start. I gave up trying and since then, I sold the mustang.
They hooked mine up the same way. I've never had any problems with mine starting. I think it waints 10 sec before starting. Mine is the Viper 971 w/ 2 way remote. Love it. Just be ready to buy AAA battery every month.
I have the same one. I love it, I guess I am patient, because the delay in starting doesn't bother me. I have never had it not start. I love the cool down feature, I car leave it running, remove the keys, alarm it, and run into the store grab what I need and the ac/heater keeps my temp. Or on a long haul, it will shut down alowing the turbo to cool.
It's a Viper 791XV and if you're buying a battery every month then you should turn off the page mode that wakes up the remote every 5 seconds to check the status. If the alarm goes off, the pager will alert you. The only thing I can see the page mode helping would be if it doesn't send out the signal that the remote start has deactivated, but a simple push of the lock or unlock button will correct it.
I had a 791XV installed in my 5spd Nissan. The only danger would be to make sure you never park and leave it in gear.
There are remote starts that make you go through a procedure before turning off the car so it will remote start the next time. Kinda defeats the purpose imo.
When I bought my '07 the dealer wanted me to pay $500 for the "factory" alarm system that they installed after receiving the vehicle, I did not want it so they tried to charge me $200 in labor to remove it.......my response was F**K YOU! They didn't charge me to take out the bedliner they put in without my permission, why charge me to take out the alarm that was put in without my permission? Their response was "we put them in all vehicles and if the customer doesn't want the system we just don't activate it". So before signing any paperwork I made them put it in writing to remove the factory alarm system without charging me, I really wanted the Gold package (remote start, keyless entry, alarm, 2 aux. remote functions) but they wanted to charge me $1200 to put it in!!!! After we signed the paperwork and I legally took posession of my new truck I went to the dealer's parts counter and ordered the system I wanted.....$280.00!! Asked the service mgr. who they contract their installs to and a phone call and $250 later had my factory gold package installed by the dealers company (no warranty issues) for $530. They even came out to my office to do the install, not bad when the dealer wanted $1200. I highly recomend using the gold package instead of aftermarket systems as there is alot of electronics and sensors that the factory system is designed to accomodate. The aftermarket systems do have work arounds but it just isn't worth it to me to have to deal with being the middle man between the aftermarket mfr. and the dealer if there's ever any problems. Had 1 put in my '03 F250 SD as well, always starts even when it's 100+ degrees here.
I had the gold package on my 03, it was ok. What I like about the viper 2 way pager is that
#1 the range is many times farther than stock. I can be in the checkout line at HomeDepot and start the truck with the AC on and get into a nice cool truck.
#2 the remote confirms that the truck actually started.
Jomac, as far as I know there isn't a way to hook up to a wait to start or tach wire on our trucks. There is some sort of serial cable that attaches the PCM to the dash and carries all that information, instead of seperate wires. I have the Autopage RS1000 and mine is set up the same way.
That being said I am pretty happy with my setup so far. I haven't had the time to sit down and figure everything out yet though. Once I do I'm sure I'll like it even more.
On my 02, I was able to connect to the tach wire behind the fuse box for the PTO stuff. I think it was green with a white tracer. Worked great b/c I had the same problem with it cranking and not starting.
The only way I have figured to connect the WTS light is add a wire from the dash cluster light to the remote start. Unfortunately my remote start can't use a WTS signal, so it doesn't matter for me.

#3 the viper has glass breakage detection.

I like the aftermarket one better too. I can sometimes start mine well over a 1/4 mile away. Confirmation is nice too.
However, the ford system is nice b/c it has built in PATS bypass. Other systems need a module or a key hidden under the dash. Any theif would be able to figure it out and use the key to start the truck. Since my 02 doesn't use PATS it didn't matter. They may be better since the last time I checked.
Even with the Ford system, I wouldn't expect Ford to warranty the whole system. You just may not have problems with, "the aftermarket alarm voids the warranty", b/c it is a Ford part, but the install is still between you and the contracted installer.
just a note for you guys I just looked and up to 06 so far as i can tell the tach wire for the diesel is a lt. green/white wire in a loom near the parking brake.. sounds like the same loom as where the wires for the idle control mod are located. but so far i havent been able to figure out the wait to start light wire (if there is one) yet. so you guys with the 07-08 trucks might take a look for this wire..

edit: sorry had the wire color wrong.. its right now...
if you cant find the wire there according to my source you can pick it up at the pcm on the 06 models, its pin 1 in a 46 pin connector.
