Has anyone added aftermarket remote start to their 08? I didn't get keyless entry and would like remote start so I thought I would get a good one that had keyless on it. I have seen some with a little lcd screen on the remote that monitors interior temps and things like that, anyone have experience with them?
I just had an autopage rs-9000 or 900(cant remember) put on my 07. I like it so far, but I am going to have to take it back and have them fix a couple of things. If you have a remote start put on your truck (and its a diesel) you must insist on two things.
1) They must hook into your wait-to-start wire so that the truck starts as soon as the light goes off.
2) They must hook into the tach wire, so that the truck will crank until it starts.
On my truck, they set a timer, and it sits for 30 seconds before cranking, most of the time it takes about 5 for the glow plug light to go off. They set a crank timer, and it was installed on an 80 degree day. Now that is down in the 50s every day it never starts on the first try, and the alarm goes off.
Jomac, as far as I know there isn't a way to hook up to a wait to start or tach wire on our trucks. There is some sort of serial cable that attaches the PCM to the dash and carries all that information, instead of seperate wires. I have the Autopage RS1000 and mine is set up the same way.
That being said I am pretty happy with my setup so far. I haven't had the time to sit down and figure everything out yet though. Once I do I'm sure I'll like it even more.
They hooked mine up the same way. I've never had any problems with mine starting. I think it waints 10 sec before starting. Mine is the Viper 971 w/ 2 way remote. Love it. Just be ready to buy AAA battery every month.

texcan, so you had it prof installed? that's what i'm leaning to. I've done a few before, but on older model trucks, and not a diesel. what's a reasonable price to pay for install?
Also, does the Ford remote start systems work on these trucks? I was lookin at the Gold pkg. thanks.
I'm not sure about the gold pkg. But I would thing it would, but don't hold me to that. I paid $500 for the alam and install. Lifetime warenty on there work. Looked into doing it myself but they don't have any instructions or wire diagram. I guess this is so only a few people know how to beat the system. Sounded good to me. All in all, I'm very happy with it.

There has to be a way to do it, because something turns that light on. Maybe no one has found it yet, I don't know, but it should be able to be done.
texcan: yours is wired the correct way to the tach wire, which tells it to crank until it senses voltage. Mine is set to crank for a certain amount of time, which will not work on a diesel.
In the older vehicles there was pretty much one wire that went from the PCM to the wait to start light, and a different wire for the tachometer. It was very simple to just tap into these wires to get the signal for a remote start.
With the 6.0L the dash cluster pretty much is a computer on its own. It gets a bunch of information from the PCM over a serial cable and then interprets it and shows that information with the gauges and lights. You would pretty much have to have some kind of computer to intercept the signal between the pcm and the dash cluster and look for the different information that tells the dash cluster what RPM it is, and when to shut the wait to start light off. This is much more trouble than any remote start manufacturer is going to go through since it will be different for pretty much every make and model of vehicle. That is why the build in the different timer settings and voltage sensors to try to figure the stuff out in other ways. It is fairly simple to change the amount of time that it waits for the the glowplugs to warm up. If it is taking to long just change the setting. The same is true for crank time, just change your settings.
The problem with a crank setting is that it changes so much with the temperature and other variables. There has to be a wire somewhere, I guess I'm going to have to start digging...
Well it looks like we are stuck with that stupid glow plug timer, I hate how auto companies are making it harder for the aftermarket...
They do have a tach wire, and I am going to be going back to the place that installed my remote start and having them hook it up, and re-program the wait timer to a shorter time...
I just had a "Viper 5900" alarm with remote start installed on my '99 F-350. It waits for the start light to go off before it trys to crank. It has a way to leave the engine running, with alarm on, for leaving the truck, key in hand, for short periods. It even has a timed run after exiting the truck, to let the turbo cool. After 1, 3 or 5 minutes the engine shuts down. The system QUOTE " is only for Viper trained installers" I paid $200 for installation, which took about 3 1/2 hours.
Slightly off the original topic here folks, but has anyone ever heard of a remote start system that can be installed in a standard shift truck? I've heard all the DANGER DANGER stories and understand the risk of having a standard shift truck with an auto-start system. Just curious if anyone has seen it done?

I've seen it done, and I'm not quite sure how it works. I would go to a respected car audio shop in your area and see what they say.
