where is the trans e4od computer located. the truck is a 92 extened cab 4x4.
The tach is not working, the od off light is on, and the truck only has one gear forward. the speedo works fine. the truck worked fine when I last drove it a week ago, got in it today and it had this problem. Thanks
well i couldnt tell you if it changed places from 91 -92 but mine is a 91
and the trans comp is on the drivers side all the way at the back of the engine compartment...its the part with all the wires he he.
although im not sure that they go bad very often, in mine the ground wire came loose and it stopped working when it was hot out. but that was after the rebuild
does your tach work as well? becasue as far as i know the trans reads of of speedo tack and tps throttle posi senser.
the smart people will be along sometime. theyll help they allways do
does the truck have reverse because an e4od should have second and reverse even if the eletrical connections are missing. the computer is located in the cab behind the parking brake bracket. the wire harness for it is in the engine compartment and you have to take the 10mm bolt out to unpulg it. check all eletrical connections on the trans make sure the one on the bottom righ is snapped all the way in and covered by the heat sheild. the tack not working will put the truck into safe mode(overdrive lite blinking) it is the big nut with the 2 wires the screws into the front cover on the engine were you fill it with oil.
look down by the inner fender and firewall you will see the connection. probably removable from the drivers side kick panel where the emergency brake pedal is. the plug unit by the inner fender is about 1 inch wide by 6 inches long.
DING DING DING DING........ jackpot.... Fix the tach and it will work. You MUST have fully operational Tach and speedo to have E4OD correct operation. Your in what is called limp mode DO not drive it untill fixed or you will damage the trans....
A dead tach sender should/would send the automatic trans into a "failure management mode" (limp mode) with harsh engagements and firm shift feel and an abnormal shift schedule. It has no effect on a manual trans only the Tach readings.
Check the wires where they exit the big nut on the oil filler housing , known to short out due to bare wire.....
Replace the tach sender on the oil fill housing a big 1" nut with 2 wires. Ford only part Engine RPM sensor E5TZ-17B384-A about $50. You can remove and clean it but usually changed later too.
You can test it too, hold it in the air away from ferrous metal, using an ohm meter lead on each wire you need DC resistance between 2000-3000 ohms.
it turned out to be the 20a maxi fuse under the hood. put in another fuse drove all day stoping and starting the motor with no problem. This morning went to start the truck and the fuse was blown again. as a side note, I'am having problems with my glow plugs and or controller. I have to cycle the plugs with the key several time before it will start. I have new plugs and a controller that will be installed over the weekend. Could the glow plug issue cause the trans fuse to blow?

I have an 89 F350 SD 7.3IDI w/E40D. When the engine is at an idle the tach shows no reading and the OD light flashes. With a slight press on the pedal the tach starts to read again (and seems accurate above 1000rpm on the scale). Could this be a problem with my tach sensor? If so, could it harm my transmission?
Thanks!
