Water leaking

I noticed a small water leak on my truck the other day and then today it just started pouring. I can't figure out what is leaking but i think its the water pump. The leak is coming from right by the crank pulley as far as I can see. Does anybody know if I am right/wrong any info is greatly appreciated.

That does sound like the water pump went south.

The only other option I can think of would be a split in the side of the lower radiator hose that is spraying coolant at the crank pulley.

The weep hole on the water pump main shaft seal is directly above the crank pulley..... use a mirror and see if there is a stained area around the hole..........

I had this happen to two diesels in as many weeks. First with a 6.5 turbo, and later with my 6.9. In both cases the pump gasket had failed at the bottom. Not sure how comon this is but from one day to the next you could see more leaking, but in both cases, the water pump was still good.

My truck started leaking last Wednesday, and today was the first time I got to look at it. It must be leaking out the weep hole or it could be the gasket. It is dripping down the front of the block onto the crank. If it is just the gasket would it in my best interest to replace the water pump anyway?

Joetravelall, if the pump is fairly new, I would just replace the gasket. If there is any question about the age of the pump, I would replace it. No sense in doing the gasket and then doing it all again...even if it lasted 2 more years, I'd still replace it.

But thats just me

This is the time of year when good old cold water leaks rear their ugly head.

Check the water pump shaft for play in any direction.
If you have play, replace the water pump.

The fan clutch threads off the water pump shaft, left hand threads.
When I reinstall the fan clutch, I always put a couple drops of lock tite on the threads.

I did have one back off under deceleration, it made a very big hole in the radiator.

PLC7.3 I have lost my privileges to email you for the water pump R&R. I've been out of town. If you would please email them to me. It has gone from a cup every couple of days to a gallon a day now. I need to get it done fast.

Thanks Joe
