Is your gas tank full or ??? when trying to pump fuel out of it? I found a nasty little crack/rot spot on my pickup tube just inside the tank. It ran fine when the tank was full but stalled out after the fuel level dropped below the cracked area. I put my own pickup tube in the tank and solved my problem.
The gasket, you're describing, will line up centered with the sending unit hole. Then snug the bolts down to seal the sending unit. Once you take the sending unit out you'll be able to see that the pickup tube is roughly 1/4" from the bottom of the tank sitting above a channel. Over time the channel collects all the flaked off rust, some large enough to cover the pickup tube opening. Before I replaced my pickup tube I pulled the tank out, threw a 2 foot section of heavy chain inside my tank and shoke it vigerously to knock off any scale. Then rinsed the tank clean with 5 gallons of gas. The gas that poured out was dark brown from all the deposits that I knocked loose. I mention chain since you can fish it out with a magnet. Some people will throw in rocks but not be able to get them out without a few hours of cursing themselves.
Before you blow compressed air threw the lines back to the tank, pop off the gas cap. This will keep from splitting the tank if the cap is not vented.
Have you checked the rubber line connections??? IF they are original rubber lines, they could be split or have a small leak that wont let the fuel pump draw a vacuumn on the tank to suck up the fuel.
Plug the line at the tank and see if you can draw a vaccumn on the fuel line at the pump or visa versa. Same issue can occure with the fuel line valve.
Just because you can blow trough the line does NOT mean that it is good, it has to hold a vaccum or 3-4 pounds pressure without leaking off.
thanks critter and airharley...Im gonna check those things out...good point on the lines being able to hold the prime and not bleed off...it was doing that with other carb as it was leaking out the front...different carb, same issue....I will give those a looksee and let you guys know what happens...
Hello Camper. I had a fuel pickup problem. It was the gasket/O-ring on the filter bowl. The gasket was pinched and the pump was drawing air. Just thought I would try to help.
Hey CS have you tried bypassing the tank selector valve. I've seen them cause problems in the past. Just use some rubber fuel line and bypass it or remove it completely.
