fuel p/u problems..still....
I fired it up yesterday...or tried to...started off fine with initial prime but it seems that its not picking up from the tank...my guess anyway....I went and took a looksee at a tank from a 66 Im gonna be getting for nada in a lil bit...question is...A..how far down does the tanks pickup go to? and B...whats the pourpose of there being a 2nd tube going down into the tank from the p/u line area...one runs straight down like I would expect but the 2nd one goes down a bit and about 1/2 way down goes to the side and follows it down to the bottom...I havent cut open one of these to see exactly what it is which is why Im wondering...The other thing Im wondering...I have one of those floor mounted switch levers for the extra saddle tanks it once upon a time had...has anyone ever heard of these things going bad ????
Let me know...and thanks in advance guys

Hipoparts.com sells a CD of the complete 1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog. An excellent pic of the fuel lines can be found in Section 90; Page 4 of the Illustration Section. This illustration only shows one line leading from top of tank to carb. I doubt the mechanical valve on the floor is causing the problem. I'd look for a pinched or restricted fuel line.
I assume the fuel pump is OK, and the internal fuel pump fuel filter (as original) isn't clogged.
I also doubt the mechanical valve on the floor is the problem. Im gonna try to find a decent strong flashlight and see if I can look into the tank and see what the p/u line looks like...Im down to either the tank p/u inside beings bad or the external lines along the frame being bad...but I have blown backwards from the fuel pump line rearward w/o problem....so Im thinking its the p/u line as Ive looked at the lines on the frame and no signs of leaking or weeping or smell of gas.
So Im off to get another tank...if mine is ok theres nothing wrong with having a spare ....plus a sending unit...btw...ND...you mentioned a few weeks back there were 2 types of gaskets used on them...wheres the split at...is up to 66 one type and 67 up being another or ????
Thanks for your help...Im gonna be getting that cd of the parts books...for 20 bucks, all but impossible to go wrong...

The parts catalog offered by Hipoparts is the one I use here on FTE.

As to what redmanbob mentioned above...I have replaced 2 new fuel pumps...when I mean bottle feeding, I mean disconnecting the tank and frame rail lines from the scenario...i.e., undoing the rubber line from the truck fuel line @ frame rail and bottle feeding thru the pump upwards...the 1st pump I swapped out....it wouldnt bottle feed at all...
I appreciate all the input...keep it coming :-)

Pull out the sending unit and look inside the tank with a small inspection mirror and flashlight. You should be able to see if that is the problem.
Stupid question time: Is the fuel tank selector switch in the right position? Sorry, I had to ask. Anyway, I would remove the switch and hook the fuel line up directly to eliminate it as a possible problem down the road.

When I did the fuel pump a cpl months or so ago, I was able to blow backwards in the line w/o any problem...the aux. tank mechanical switch is in the right place.

Bill, I got me a sending unit gasket for my beast...I was of the impression it would be a wider ring with holes in it to line up with bolts on tank...the one I got is a cork one...about 1/4" wide by about 1/8 thick...I havent replacedone of these nor seen how the tank is set up to recived the gasket...is there a recessed lip in the opening that the ring sits in ?? or is it a flat area you eyeball before you suck the bolts down ???
Let me know as Im gonna be giving it a looksee in the next few days...
Thanks, cs65
