Hello everyone, i seem to have a problem with my column shifter. its on a 74 f100 hooked up to a c-4. I just put a new C4 in yesterday, and after filling it up with fluids and taking it a round the block i went to shift into Park and the shifter wouldnt move, and when it finally did it broke, now im stuck in drive. the shifter has full movement. i looked into the collar and saw that there is what looks like a cast iron ring inside that im assuming is supposed to hold it on there, well this ring was cracked down the middle in two places. SO.....is this something that i can pick up from a JY or is it a special order part? i think the local JY still has a few 73-79 f series so if thats the case shouldnt be that hard, but am i going to need a whole new steering column or just everything that goes in that collar.
thanks
chris

When the collar breaks the inner piece separates from the outer. Since it's a dark gray color, it might resemble cast iron (there's NO cast iron anywhere in the steering column). I'm sure it's the shift collar he needs...what else is there that can break in two?
These shift collars have been a bugbear (PITA) since day 1.
I broke several of those. They can be replaced (7228) but it takes a little time. The truck can be shifted from the transmission if you need to move it. Just make sure someone is holding the brake while you're under the truck.
thanks for the response. and yes i was talking about the shift collar. i picked on up at a JY today after work, went right in, but now no start......i remember reading somewhere on here that the neutral safety switch can be jumpered? anyone know?
Chock the wheels
Place gear shift lever in Neutral
Disconnect gear shift lever on trans and place it in positive neutral.
Loosen NSS on column.
Move NSS to properly insert drill bit through hole in NSS lining it up in the neutral position.
Tighten NSS bolts down
Tighten Gear shift to gear shift lever on Trans
Place Trans in Park
try and start engine
turns out the NSS is just fine, its the shaft that goes into it. it broke off somehow, so does this mean i need to get a new column? or can i just take it out and replace it with the part listed above?

D0TZ-7B097-B (replaces A) is the part that snaps into the bottom of the column and activates the neutral switch...it's stamped steel. Every Ford truck with A/T from 1965 thru 1977 uses one. The part looks like this: ---C
This part is STILL available from Ford, and is $18.72 list price. Use one of FTE Ford dealer sponsors and you'll get a discount. DIRECTFORDPARTS or Y2KFORDPARTS.
Dennis: I'm old, cranky, and somewhat informed, but I have nevah heard pot metal aka diecast metal refered to as cast iron.
