Check the cap for cracks and look for signs of tracking.
As far as i know they are original, maybe theyve been replaced once not sure though

If all you did was replace the plugs and wires, and it ran ok before, then you know something is wrong with the wire routing. A bad wire or plug will make it run rough, but i dont think it'll cause a back fire.

Check the wires again... firing order should be 13726548 counter clockwise. I'd remove the number 1 spark plug, and turn the engine over until number one piston is tdc on it's compression stroke, then take the cap off and make sure the rotor is pointed at number one, then check the firing order from there.
How do I tell when its on the TDC on its compression stroke?

The easiest way is to take the plug out, rotate the engine over until the balancer is on 0, hold your thumb over the spark plug hole while you're turning it. If you feel pressure coming out you're on the compression stroke, if you dont you're on the exhaust stroke and you need to spin it around 1 more time. to make sure it's at tdc, you can just put a little wood dowl or something down in the spark hole, once you get to 0 it SHOULD be at tdc...that is unless your balancer has slipped, in that case you'd need the stick of wood and watch it until the point where it wont go any higher.

But once you're sure you're at tdc on the compression stroke, just pull the cap off and the rotor should be at, or close to the number one plug. If it is, then like i said check your firing order from there.

Well....the balancer is the circular thing down at the front bottom of the engine below the water pump. It's got a lot of marks on it, with a little timing pointer bolted to the block pointing to it.

Oh, I know what you mean.

Well I think I found the problem. Popped the cap off and the metal piece that spins around on the end of the rotor (dont know what its called) was busted clean off.
