Hi All.....Putting my truck back together, and we want to get it started so we can pull it out of the garage on a nice day to clean said garage so we can get ready to paint it......
It has new EVERYTHING wires, points, plugs...everything ignition related, the guy I bought it from sold it because it was backfiring......anyhow..we try and start it with gasoline or starting fluid and it backfires up through the carb and wont continue to run we are going to troubleshoot fuel pump and stuff to make sure its getting fuel on its own but once that issue is resolved, what are possibilities that would cause this backfiring that we can start troubleshooting?
Been busy with school, and working on the truck. Got the new intake manifold and carb on. Noticed on the old 2bbl, the vacuum port plugs were all rotted out. No wonder it ran like cr@pola!
So you got all new electronics, what about the carb?
Gotta be one of three things. Number one, timing is way off. Most likely culprit. If it's too far advanced the plug will fire while the intake vavle is still open. try attaching a timing light with no fuel supplied and pull all plugs except number one. make sure battery is hot and spin it over with the starter and watch for the timing marks. They should be coming up a little retarded from the recommended setting. Number two. Firing order off. Double and triple check the wires. Also be sure you are using the correct order for the engine you've got, as not all Fords use the same order. Third, you could have an intake valve not closing/seating. A compression test or better yet, a leakdown test will reveal this. Don't worry about fuel supply till this problem is fixed, as you'll just be adding something to catch fire from the backfire.
