my story goes as follows , i have a 73 F100 with the same age 302 engine with the C4 3 speed transmission , the engine ran as smooth as silk but began to smoke due to worn valve guides etc. i found another short block ( bored +60)with new heads crane cam etc , i fitted the engine and it runs well apart from a vibration at about 1000 rpm and then again at at i would say at 3500 rpm and above. engine cast number on new block is EOAE D3G or c at the end.
my intial thoughts are that i have an inbalance on the engine ,the front damper is from the original engine as is the flexplate ?
if anyone has had this problem and fixed it i would be grateful for there input, because its driving me mad, thanks.
there is a good chance you need to change the flexplate and balancer to 50oz balance. not sure when they changed it, can you get the date code off the block?
1980 should still be 28oz. The change wasn't till '81-'82. Someone might have put a later crank in it though, which is do-able with a little machining...
At the same time they switched to the 50oz. imbalance they also went to a 1-piece rear main seal. The earlier 28oz. cranks with the 2-piece seal had an oil slinger ridge at the back of the crank which can be machined off to fit it in a later block, but now that I think about it, I don't believe there's any machining to be done to fit a later crank in an early block...not too sure as I haven't really messed with this.
I think that if your vibration was caused by a imbalance mismatch problem you'd experience vibration all through the RPM range, not just at certain RPMs. You might try just swapping the balancer and run it briefly to see if it hurts or helps before going deeper and swapping the flexplate...
i have just fitted the 50 oz damper and the vibration is now heavier but smoother if that makes any sense , it doesnt feel as if the prop is going to fall of like before. the vibration is only noticeable when accellerating hard and when reving the engine with either damper .

There do seem to be some discrepancies as to exactly when the changeover to 50oz. imbalance actually took place. Most sources seem to agree on 1981, I've seen a few that say 1980 and I even have one book which says 1985... So it could indeed be your problem, though I'd sure hate to see you go to all the work to swap out the flex plate and find that wasn't it...
The E0AE block wasn't a one year only deal. It was used several years in addition to 1980. The switch to 50 oz was sometime between the years 1981 & 1982. The one piece seal switch was December 1, 1982. The E0AE block would have been used up until then
what part of the code determines the actual age of the block ie a 1982 etc, the 50z flexplate with 157 teeth which is what i need is a special order here in the UK and is costing £140 ( $280) fingers crossed it will cure the problem if not i will have a nearly new flexplate for sale in about 10 days time lol.
