was cruisin down down the road today, truck was running good, started smelling what smelt like burnt oil, little bit of smoke commin out of my shifter boot...pulled over and looked under, and it was gushing oil pretty good, so I shut it off, popped the hood and there was oil spray all under the hood....looking at it makes it seem like rear main seal, but I did a bit of reading and it could also be pedistal O-rings or an HPOP line......any opinions?
Hey crack! Sorry to hear about the oil leak bud....but it really does not sound like a rear main seal (at least any rear main that I have seen fail). I think your guess on HPOP or pedistal is on the money. I'd clean up the area, have a friend start the truck with you at a ringside seat for the spraying action .
well. it might be a turbo pedestal, if its comming from the top of the motor. look at your up pipes and DP, see if they have burned oil on them, and or if they wet, look in the valey to see if you have oil in the front of it, or not, and another thing would be you Pedestal itself, the waistgate actuator.
you should be able to find the leak....
keep us posted
Start with what you think. If you don't see anything, wash your engine then crank it for a few seconds, then look again. Should be easy to find, that much oil spraying around.
If it is truly spraying, then look at the high pressure oil system. If that's the case, you will see the oil coming out fairly quick. Any of the orings on the hp oilside are subject to fail. I don't know how much spray factory you will see from turbo orings. The fan will move things around some. I doubt it a rear main seal, just don't hear of those failing in PSD's. Clean her up and crank her up. If it's a bad leak, you want have any problems finding it.
im leaning towards the something to do with hpop, because I dont think the main seal would just go like that with no previous leaking....I just got it home so Ill have to have a good look....thanks for your input!!

Well, not to mention that it won't spray out all over the place like you described from there either. Just not enough pressure there. It will pretty much just leak.
crack i bet it is gonna be the hpop line o-rings. i came out of the house one day to find 11 quarts of oil in my drive way, and that was what was wrong. haha it scared the crap outta me.
mine doesnt leak any oil unless its running....does this rule anything out?
Pretty much rules out a hole in the oil pan or leaking/missing drain plug. Not trying to be a smart @$$, but if the truck isn't running, almost all the oil is in the pan (or in-route to it).
Spraying = pretty high pressure. I had a leak at my HPX that didn't spray, and that is definitely in the high pressure path (didn't torque the couplers/adapters correctly ). I think you're heading in the right direction. I don't even think the turbo pedistal will spray like I'm envisioning your description.
