i sure hope someone knows more about computers then i do (which wouldnt be that hard).
Here is the problem.
I go to startup my desktop computer and everything seems to go fine,
Searching for Boot Record from floppy....Not found
Searching for Bood Record from IDE-0..OK
(IDE-0 is my HD with win 98 se)
then, nothing happens. It just sits there staring back at me.
Do i need to reinstall windows?
anyone? help!
When this happens I shut the switch (at the back of the computer) off then flip it back into the on mode and then the press power button on the Front again to re-boot it.
let it sit for a while, if it takes longer than 10mins you may have to press "F8" repeatedly while it is searchin for a boot record, a list will show, choose "SAFE MODE" and then reboot from inside windows if it gets that far.
ahhhh, im getting ready to run the desktop over with my truck!!!!
its been sitting for more then 10 min and i tried to press F8 when it was looking for a boot record, but nothing happened.
AGH!!!!!
Im trying a startup disk now.
It sounds to me like you need to reinstall everything, starting with your driver discs that came with your hard drive. Then reinstall your operating system. If that doesn't work, I would suggest getting a new hard drive.
Your file system has either become corrupted or your hard drive has self destructed. Be sure you let scandisk do a surface check on the drive platters. I'm betting that your drive is dead, but either wayit sucks. Hope you didn't lose much data, dude.

Standard mouse or cordless? If it is a standard mouse, it may just be old and the wires inside the cord are crimped/frayed from use. Try a different mouse and see if the problem happens again. Wireless mouse- you could have something in the area of your computer that is interfering with the signal. Flourescent lights, Remote Controls, cordless telephones can cause a wireless mouse to act weird.
98 is a lousy program!!! It is time to upgrade. Windows XP is the first microsoft OS that is worth the money. Bill Gates is rich, but has sold alot of crap( especially win98).
My few years using 98 were plagued with too many problems, 98 locks up every chance it gets, and all the microsoft downloads and patches to correct the program didn't help at all. it was 10 times more troublesome than win 3.0, 3.11, and 95.
If you have a large antivirus ( Norton or Mcaffee) running in the background, that will also help grind things to a halt.
Will it run in Safe Mode?? When it is booting up it should present you with the option to run safe mode or normal. You may need to hold the F1 or F5 keys when asked to do so at boot-up. I forget the exact details. Safe mode allows windows to run a bare bones program and troubleshoot without everything trying to operate in the background.
It boots up in safe mode ,mouse is only 4,5 months old, must just be because it is 98se lol. I can bare with it but sometimes I feel like the guy with the truck above me.%!@^%^&&*^$#%$^&^
