Joe,

Thank you. I did see your previous answer. I thought it was the best answer out of all of them. If I came off sounding like a smart-a$$ it was because of reading about all the local tinting laws and not getting the actual answer to the original question.

Thank you again. Once I saw 3M, I knew that must be the one. 3M is the best you can get IMO and I am sure they would be the closest match to OEM.

Not a problem. Although I see someone is claiming 16% on the stock rear windows. That surprises me -- mine is 35%. Attached is a pic of my truck kind of focused on the windows, and as you can *maybe* see, the backs are a tad darker, but not by whole lot. You really have to be looking to notice a difference...

Joe,

Great pic! I'm sold on the 35% 3M. I didn't understand how the 16% was possible either. My truck is white too. I waited too many years to get a white vehicle. Looks good even when it needs a good washing! Ernie.

Matching the rest was the main criteria. I had 20% on my 'stang, and I liked it, but it was installed on all the other non-tinted windows. I went with what was the closest match with color mainly, but was interested in matching the darkness as well. I ended up at 35%, which is max legal here in TX anyway. It worked out...

Security window tint exemptions stickers can be obtained in some states that allow you do do what ever you want. I'm a P.I. and black out most windows so people can't see me in the car.

I have 3% (not 30) on all my windows except the windshield. I love it during the day and hate it at night. Nothing like rolling down the windows in the pouring rain or blowing snow to be able to see backing up!!

Being that the original question came from CA here is the link to the CA vehicle section that applies to window tint. You have to read to the bottom of the section to (d) to get the real story. Being in law enforcment the way I read that section is you can tint as long as the end product does not reduce the light transmittance to below 70% (aka-a 30% tint). I'm tinting my fronts with 35% because I could not find anything less, contrary to popular belief having a badge does not always get you a get out of jail free card. I know alot of cops who say you can't tint the fronts at all but by reading the section I think they are incorrect.

The link Scott posted is from the CHP (CA Highway Patrol) website and we in real law enforcement know that CHP really stands for Can't Handle Policework.

One thing to do if you are pulled over and you don't want to be shot by a rookie is to roll down all tinted windows so the LEO can see in the car or truck. They will thank you for it.

being from the grand independent republic of Kalifornistan, My $.02:

Get youself a doctor to write you a prescription because you are sensitive to the sun (like me)

take said prescrip, laminate one to keep in vehicle and give copies to appropriate DMV supervisor for waiver. Keep laminated copy of waiver in vehicle also BECAUSE the CHP is gonna pull you over.

I believe the waiver allows you to have up to 20%, but no mirrored.
