Question Window Tint

Does anybody know the tint % for the privacy glass for the rear doors and window for 2003? I want to get a mild tint on the front doors but don't want to exceed the rest of the truck.

Thanks for any help.

You'll have to check with your local rules and regs for that one.

The closest tint to get the fronts to match the rears at 16% would be to have 20% put on the fronts.

My truck had the tint added on the front doors when I purchased it. I believe it is considered 35 percent light transmission, which is the darkest legal tint for the front doors. It matches the privacy tint very closely. It did have an extra tint added to the rear glass, but I don't know what darkness. The added tint on the back makes it look a step above the limo tint.

I think in California it is illegal to put any tint at all on the front door windows. A guy that I used to work with out there got pulled over and got a fix it ticket for tinted door windows on his truck. He had to remove it or pay a big fine. They claim that other drivers cannot see you and that creates a hazard. In Texas it is legal to tint the door windows but I do not know the percentage. Mine are pretty dark and I always pass inspection. Good thing too as tinted windows are a must here.

I believe it's 30 or 35%. I got mine done with some that very closely matched the rear windows. It's a hair lighter, but unless you're looking specifically at it to compare, you wouldn't notice. It was 3M Tint IIRC, if you really want to know, I'll get the paperwork out of the truck -- I keep it there because the warranty specifically states that you must have it to be honored.

My old car had 4% limo all the way around and 35% on the windshield, it got really annoying though it was like driving in cave, and it was hard to back up at night. Now that I got my truck I have kept it tint free except for factory tint and I like that a lot better. Just my .02 though, Oh and I always hated looking over my shoulder to see if there were any cops around, most around here don't care, but a few are real picky about it, espcially the our MN revenue collectors (i.e. MN State Patrol)

I hear you with the tickets. I live in CA right now, but I'm in the military and move around more than my fair share. I see plenty of people around with front tinted windows (allowed by law if it is sold with privacy glass, not tint), but it's not worth the hassle. However, if I end up back in South Carolina...

Thanks for all the quick replies.

Here in IL they dont bother you if your not doing anything else wrong I have limo tint on all mine the back window and 2 back side windows you cant see into with your face pressed against the glass they went right over the factory tint and drivers and passenger windows you cant see into only if you press your face against it. it sure helps with the heat keeping it out in the summer but it took awhile to get used to PLOWing snow

I just tinted mine and got some advice on a tinting forum somewhere of the internet. It turns out the rear windows are just privacy glass. It does nothing to block UV and heat. I went with 20% all around (no windshield) and very happy with it. If your not use to driving w/ dark windows, it's a big change, but your eyes will get use to it. 35% is great, but not dark enough IMO. My interior stays much cooler and the dog appreciates it.

Thanks for any help.
I put my tint meter on the slider and came up with close to 20%. That is what I put on the front windows and it looks good IMO. I know that the limit here in MA is 35%, with some new changes to the law that I am not up to date on.

I think that if you keep it close to that you will be fine, but check out what the limit is so you do not get your ***** busted. (I know that is common sence but I felt the need to say it.)

Yep, be careful. The law in California is written a little more strict than I thought. It is illegal to have anything on your front side windows unless it clear. I know that there are people probably doing it anyway but all it takes is the right police officer and you're hosed.

I always knew moving to Texas was a good idea....

Well, I thought I answered it. Here's the original question:

And here's my answer:

Is that what you were looking for??? Not trying to sound like a smart @$$ -- just trying to answer your question...

BTW, I got the paperwork. It's 35% 3M Scotchtint Color-Stable.
