I did some digging here & couldn't find an answer so here it goes...
I picked up a beater truck with a 460 and turns out it has roller rockers & solid lifters...the previous owner didn't know anything about the motor and I pulled it half apart to make sure it was runable.
Now I want to put it back together(did not have cam out since dizzy was pretty stuck) and don't know anything about valve lash(other than some posts here say to do it hot with my feeler gauge). Is there a general rule of thumb for how I should start at cold or where it should be once she's hot?
The heads also appear to have stock springs - Is there anyway to figure out what springs I should be using?
Sorry for the long post - I just want to get this right - Thanks -
You might want to take the heads in for inspection, and at the same time, take the cam lift measurements to see if the springs are adequate for the lift of the cam. A machine shop can check the installed spring height and seat pressure of your valves.
Many manufacturers recommend driving the engine and getting it hot just before checking lash. Some have even recommended checking while the engine is running at idle! (Chrysler slant six was one, I believe) Takes some practice, I'm sure. lol
