I was checking the fluids on my 2000 f-150 today, and when I unscrewed the fill bolt on the transfer case, about a gallon of fluid came gushing out. I was finally able to get the plug threaded back in, but not all the fluid came out. I am not sure how it could be this full or maybe there is another plug higher up i missed, although i didn't see one. could it be possible that there was that much pressure backed up or something like that. I had shut the truck off about 10-15 minutes before i checked and it was sitting on level ground. I have not used by 4 wheel drive for about 5 days before this happend. any ideas on what the deal is. Thanks
Tyler
For a "gallon" of fluid to come out, you must of unscrewed the drain plug, because i dont see how somebody got that much fluid in there through the fill plug without it leaking back out when you tried to put the plug back in.
That is what I can't figure out either. I pulled the plug that said fill by it and it was the top one the bottom one said drain, which i never removed. is it possible there is a third plug higher up for some crazy reason?
I guess there could be, what color was the fluid. If the fluid was gray/White maybe the tansfer case was submerged under water sometime during its life? The color should be red, i believe they use tranny fluid.
it should be 2 quarts, it should be red, and it sould be up to the level of the upper fil plug. i dont know what happened, but i would pull the upper plug and let it run out to that level. put the plug back in, run a month and see if it fills again. are you loosing transmission fluid? this should not happen.--- somehow i think someone overfilled it.
I had this problem on my 96. There was a TSB out I believe. I pulled the case right in my garage and pulled the input shaft seal on the T-case, and put a new one in. No problem after that. I would also replace the T-case to adapter gasket while you have it apart.
