on average how many miles do these engines last for before you get into those pricey repairs? my truck has 217000 on it and runs better than my van with 167000.

Anywhere around 300K miles, depending on how the driver takes care of the machine. Remember, the 240 and 300 are almost twins. My beast has 207K miles. I'm hard on it too

The body will rot off and the frame will break before that 300 gives up the gost. they can easily run 320 plus as long as they are taken care of

300k is about right assuming you A: treat it well and B: don't have a "newer" block with the craptastic composite [aka plastic] timing gears. A '92 300 would have said composite gears. No set mileage as to when they should be replaced, their failure seems quite random. Replacing them is cheap enough, just a lot of labor to get to. On the upside it's a great excuse to install a new cam

Just change oil hot and change oil often. Keep it full of fluids and drive it like you stole it. It'll go!

I've seen most users I know do 500,000 - 600,000 on their 300 I-6's before anything really expensive needed to be done to them.

My truck got a new block at 70,000 original miles.

It ended up just being a defective harmonic balancer, but my father was not happy with the technician who diagnosed it as a bad engine. Now its got 103,000 miles with only 30,000 on the motor. I probably won't see the end of that engine before I give it away or sell it someday...if I ever do.

Mine's going strong at just under 330k miles. I changed the timing gears at about 300k after I got home from a 1500 mile road trip and spent the whole time worrying about them.

How did the fiber timing gears look at the 300k mark? I know my 82 F100's steel timing gears had little wear at 312k when I rebuilt the engine. My dad's 92 f150 has 202k and my 95 f150 has 162k.

Mine's a youngster...it only has a quarter million. I plan on getting about 300-350K out of it before it needs something major, that's if I get lucky.

They still looked brand new, but from previous experience I can tell you that fiber parts seldom have visible evidence that they are about to fail because their failure starts from the inside.
