"Average" MPG on the screen

when i look at my "MPG AVG" on the instrument panel, i cant help but wonder if thats the AVERAGE spread out through city + highway + towing mileage

actually im pretty sure thats what it means.

is there any way to set that to CURRENT MPG and not average?

i know when i hit reset going down the highway, it was showing 18 or 20 MPG until i got into some bad traffic / city driving then it was down to 15ish

and... before anyone says "just read the manual dummy!" the truck isnt here right now... and the manual is in it

Average is indicated by a number inside of a box. That box has a line extending from its left side, which intersects the "instant" readout. The green vertical bar on the left side is your instant MPG. If the green is showing above the average line, you are improving your average.

In a word, NO.

I wish they would include that in the new updated program, but I haven't heard of it. I don't have time or near-vision to read and interpret it, and keep an eye on the road. Ford missed on this one.

Average is average, since last reset, calculated over some limited range, and redone every 5 seconds or so..

I don't know what the range limit is, but on my 08 F350, I can bring it back up from 8.9 to 12.5 in less than 200 miles, even tho I drove 2000 miles at 8.9.. so there is some limit.. maybe last 100 miles or so.

and current instantaneous mileage would drive u crazy.
there is NO way to do 20mpg uphill.. (same in our prius.. uphill mileage sucks)..

On the next screen over, You can select 5, 10 or 15 minute avg or last 5 fill ups.
A 5 minute avg is pretty good indication of what you are doing for a stretch of road. the instantaneous mileage is not areal indicator of what the truck is capable of.

Do you have the full-color LCD screen in your dash? It's standard on Lariats but it is an option on XLTs

If you got the "base Screen" like I did in the XLT - U don't have all the fancy stuff they got... From 1800 to 3000 miles on the Odometer I was pulling heavy And my average suck - I just reset the average to try to get a better reading...

Now I reset every once in a while testing stuff..

On the other hand you cannot reset the "Miles til empty" & at one point it said like 220 miles - after a fillup - but now it is up to about 400± ..

That little bar graph thing that shows you economy is a joke - put foot on gas - have 1 or 0 bars - take foot off - have 5-6 bars.... Even I can figure that out...

I reset mine when I refill as well. I set a trip meter for all trips to keep track of average mpg whether loaded or not.

Yea, that real time bar graph on the standard screen is a little pointless.
They should have put something more useful on that screen space, such as oil/tranny temp like the optional LCD system.

I reset my avg mpg after each fill up.
