The paint on the welds around the receiver on the factory hitch of my '06 F250 has come off a bit, and the welds are starting to rust.
I don't use the hitch much, but the rust really bothers me. Any ideas on touching up the paint to slow down the rust and keep the nice black factory color?
Any semi gloss black does well under the body. I keep a can in my detailing kit, I have recently switched to appliance black from ACE and it looks sharp. Another idea is any under body coating.
There are many rust converters on the market. Avoid the ones that take a long curing time before the finish coat can be applied. Look for one that does not require more than light wire brushing and applying over the rust. Then paint with a top coat of your color choice.
Here is a Google search with many to choose from........
If it were me I'd use the .99 a can wal-mart special gloss black. If you want to spend big bucks get some POR-51 and it will never rust again. You can do a google search to find it.
On the hitch I would use something like por-15. You can use spray cans, but originally it was (should've been) powder coated. The por-15 will help maintain the inegrity of the remaining finish, and really protect the rusted areas. Problem is, it is difficult to manage because it cures so hard the lid often gets stuck.
You get what you pay for though. If I didn't do por-15 I would use a semi gloss quality paint. Usually I like duplicolor engine enamel. They actually have one called FORD Semi-gloss black. Not that it has to be for a Ford, but it does really well on under body stuff.
my buddy uses walmart black paint on all his vehicles. Has for years. His stuff is old, but looks like a million as he touches everything up a few times a year. Even his camping trailer looks like new underneath.
POR-15 would be a poor choice in this application. UV rays cause POR-15 to break down quickly. It shouldn't be used in any application where it may be exposed to sunlight, even the shade under the truck may be too much.
