Laptop optical drive question

Has anyone replaced a CD/DVD optical drive in a laptop?

I was in the process of trying to reload the laptop with a different O/S (Linux),
when the CD drive physically failed, with a little help from me (med. story).

Is it better left to a shop, or should I just scrap the laptop?

It's a 2001 Sony Vaio laptop (XP Home) and it's now missing the CD burner and rails.
Just the ribbon connector hanging out of the bay.

I thought I could use an external burner, but it didn't work.

The O/S is missing (says "OPERATING SYSTEM MISSING" when I boot up).
The hard drive is blank.

IS there a way to use an external burner?

Another option is just to rip it apart and see how it ticks.

Any help would be extremely appreciated.

'Ben,

Have you tried going into the bios and changing the boot order?

If you have USB as #1, then HDD as #2, you should be able to use an external CD/DVD drive.

What model Sony Vaio??????

My Sony Vaio (PCG-FRV37) has a memory (solder joint) problem.
Everything else in/on the pc is PERFECT.

I recently saw a website that has the optical drives. I'll try to find it. If memory serves me (sometimes it doesn't) they weren't too expensive.
Well. . . sorta/kinda.

EDIT: Here 'tis!!!!!!!!!

Keith, it's a Sony Vaio PCG-FX340

I also have a solder joint problem, but it's in the Ethernet port, so my cousin (previous owner)
installed a Xircom Real Port Card Bus Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56 in the PC card slot on the side of the laptop.

I'll give that BIOS thing a try.

Thanks for the link.

Ben

sony vaio is fairly simple to work on. Cant remember right offhand, but I think on the bottom are 2 screws that come out, then the optical drive slides out. I won't have one handy to look at till later this evening.

You have to watch when replacing drives as they will fit, after you change the mounting parts, but they don't always play nicely. I have a Toshiba, that I had to replace the dvd drive. I snatched one from an HP, and the drives are almost identical. The Toshiba gives an error message at boot, and absolutely will not boot from the dvd drive. Once it is up and running, I can put anything I want into the drive and it works fine.
