Sony Vaio Laptop Help

I have a older Sony Vaio laptop(PCG-FX340) which has a 15 gig hard drive and was thinking of getting an 80+ external HDD for it. My sony has 2 USB 1.1 ports and a SONY i.LINK (IEEE1394) S400 port; is this i.LINK port a firewire port?

My question is which port should I use, if I do decide to get the external HDD?

My hard drive on the laptop is filling up. 15 gigs these days is a joke.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Check the system requirements firts for the new HD.You may need to upgrade to USB (2.0).See if you can find a docking station for your laptop. Then you dont have to unplug every thing when you use it on the go.

Yes, the IEEE1394 port is Firewire. I'd use it over USB 1.1 or 2 if I had a choice. I have a USB external drive that I use for backups and transporting (in addition to a flashdrive) but it's pretty slow, especially on 1.1.

The good thing about USB is almost every computer has it, not true for Firewire. Firewire and USB 2.0 are comparable in speed aswell.

I'd go with USB, because its fairly common - therefore the cost of the external drive should be less. it would also be easier to find one.

If the CDRW ever dies - go with an external for that too. I ran into that a while back, and to replace the internal is just not worth it at all. Something like three times the price of a reliable "does it all" DCRW/DVD/CDR/Etc...

That being said - the only things you want on your main drive are essentials such as the OS and files or programs you just can't live without if you have to pack up and go somewhere with it. Many of these can be placed on CDR's, so a CD keeper is fine for that. Prog's that can be skinnied on the instal should be setup to run off the CD wherever possible, especially games and entertainment things.

FWIW
