The connectors are different and the emg flashers are on the column vs under dash switch. It can be done, you will just need to match all of the wires up to the updated column. I read an article some where on it, but haven't a clue where.
the steering column loom has 9 wires on a 73 to 79 verses a 67 to 72 model only having 7. the difference is the emergency flashers, that is the extra 2 wires. and the plug ends are different, you can make all that work but the main thing to worry about is if it is a power steering model or a non pwr steering model, there is about 2 inches in difference in column leignth between these two types. my guess is that a 79 with tilt would be a pwr steering model. do you have the ford thompson steering gear or a bendix type steering gear? there could be a small can of worms here, but i have made the conversion, if you need more help let me know. Hello,I'm new to FTE and I'm hoping somebody out there can put me back on the road with the 68 F100 ranger I recently picked up (no pun intended) for a project thru the winter and my new work truck come this spring. My problem is this the tilt column is a later yr. than the truck and the wiring in the truck does not jive w/ what is on the column (blinker switch) in no.# or color. So can somebody please Help a brother out? This is what I've got on the truck for wire-orange w/blue stripe-green w/orange stripe-white w/blue stripe-green w/white stripe-dark blue w/yellow stripe-solid light blue-solid green-light blue w/red stripe that I believe is for gear indicator on column that hangs alone from column-And these wires I believe to be for the old hazard switch-white w/red stripe-red w/black stripe-green w/white stripe-white w/blue stripe-Now this is what I've got for wires hanging off the blinker switch-light blue-dark blue-light green which are all solid colored-orange w/blue stripe-yellow w/blue stripe-white w/blue stripe-green w/white stripe-green w/orange stripe-white w/red stripe-And that problem #1.I also have 4 wires that I believe to be for the neutral safety and back up lights-2 solid orange-1 solid green w/writing(awg size etc.)-1 green w/orange stripe-So with all that said,Once again can someone please help?I believe I saw someone say in one of the postings they had the answers to which I seek,I Thank You for any help or answers given.
See if this helps, this is for a 79 column to 71 (same as 68). 79 was the first year for tile I think.
79 dark Blue to 71 Blue yellow
79 light green to 71 light green
79 orange blue to 71 orange blue
79 light blue to 71 light blue
79 green white to 71 green white
79 green orange to 71 green orange
79 white blue to 71 white blue
In 1990 I pulled the tilt out of a 1983 e150 van and put it into a 67 f250 Just had to hook the wires where needed. Not a big problem.. the emg flashers were still on the dash and the key still on the dash also. Just cut the column shaft so the rag joint can be hooked after the welding.
Hey Guys,Thanks a million.I'll give it a shot and let ya'll know if it works out for me,And I'm sure as hell glad I came to this site. Thanks again guys!

For future reference being a "tilt column" has nothing to do with it. you would ahve the same problem with a 1978 or newer non-tilt column.
The main difference in 1978 the NSS that was formerly mounted to the column was moved to the transmission plus in an earlier year the Hazard light switch was moved to the column from the dash.
Here is the 78 & newer pin out on the column wiring
I just installed a 78/79 tilt column in my 71 truck, it went very smooth and easy especially thanks to all the wiring help from you guys on this site. One thing that really helped was I cut the male steering column plug from the 78 donor truck's body wiring harness and the female plug from my 71's steering column with enough wire length on each to splice them together. Then I was able to sit down at my work bench with the wiring info I printed from this site and wiring diagrams and mark each wire on each plug then tie them together. It made a nice pigtail or adapter to connect the wiring harness from my new column to my existing truck harness.
My next step when I have more time will be to tie in the cruise control. I already have the harness and components so it looks like it will be a snap. The only issue I see is connecting the "push on" end of the 78's speedo cable to the threaded input on my 71's speedometer.
Any one have an idea what the yellow/blue stripe wire connects with? (See Mil1ion pic) Or which wire is the power wire to the top of the column? It would be great to have a company like Painless to make a pigtail to connect 67-72 wiring to later model column as what Woodyp did. It would save a lot of headache.
I understand Mil1ion, as I said I already have the whole setup which includes the wiring harness (that connects to the steering column wiring harness, the trucks brake light), the control module, relay, 2 brake switches, servo, speed sensor, and 2 piece speedometer cable. That should be everything I need.
The only problem I see is connecting the 78 truck push on speedo cable to my 71 truck's threaded speedometer.

Speed control was first introduced in passenger cars in 1967. The speedo cable from the 1967/72 Mustangs screw on, and Cruise Control was available on Mustangs beginning in 1968 (the speedo head was the same as 1967). Maybe a Mustang CC cable will work. How long are the upper/lower truck speedo cables? I'll see what the length of the Mustangs were. The 67/72 Mustang non CC cable was used on some trucks 1965/72, so there shouldn't be a problem with length.
