390 vs. 5.0 HO weight difference?

Hey all, I'm thinking of swapping a 5.0 HO with an AOD into my '76 F350 instead of the 390 with a 4 speed manual, and I'm wondering what the weight difference would be between the two?

Here is a pic of the 5.0 I plan to use... http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f2...7-22-05011.jpg

That 390 is an excellent heavy-duty work engine. Why the swap??

That's good, I'm hoping to not lose too much weight off the front end.

A few reasons, with better fuel milage, faster highway speed, and easy cold weather starting being at the top of the list. It has 4.10 gears in the D70, so I'm hoping the overdrive will get me up to interstate speeds. The truck is a 2wd F350 that has a steel flatbed with a boom/hoist I use to go places and pick up parts. It may haul a trailer with a gross weight of about 8,000 lbs just a couple times a year, otherwise the most weight it would have would be an engine or axle. The factory ratings on the engine (if I remember correctly) are 275 hp and 300 torque. The truck weighs around 6,000 lbs empty, so I'm wondering if the 5.0 and AOD would hold up to daily driving?

You may need to beef up the AOD.

Go here and put in your gears and tire sizes etc. See if you will keep that 302 in the right rpm range to pull the load. I've been in E150s with 302s and they did ok with some towing, but those probably had a little different cam than yours.

This will be a lot of work for whatever mpg increase you see. You can put an OD on your 390 for somewhere between $1500+ to $3000 depending on model.

A tuned up 390 with the OD will be on the road much sooner than your 302 swap....(imo, your mileage may vary)

you'd be better off keeping the 390, it wont have to work as hard as the 302, to pull the weight of the truck and loads. Making fuel mileage equal or worse than the 390 jmho

I'm wrong... It's only 200 hp, and 275 torque. I'm not sure where I got the first set of numbers from... just dreaming I guess

Thanks everyone for the input.

JMHO2......... The 390 doesn't have to be a gas hog. That depends on the gearing and the carb.

right, I didn't mean to say the 390 was a gas hog, Just that the 302 would have to work twice as hard to do the work of that 390. And that mpg would be better with the 390 vs the 302.

No worries, I can confuse myself sometimes

Question an argument between me, myself, and I, who wins?
