Seeing 68bluebeast's exhaust setup got me thinking... Would it be easier to run the exhaust outside the framerails after a certain point? I realize the cab has its low points where it sits level with the bottom, but wouldn't this be the route taken with saddle tanks or even in a case where you might have a fuel cell style tank? I have an older Chev with saddle tanks in MT, but I don't remember how its exhaust looks and I don't have access to my Ford either as it's in storage at my grandparent's place north of me.
The other thing I've wondered is how worthwhile stainless steel might be over the regular stuff. I know it won't rust and all, but is it worth the cost?
Bad thing about outside the frame rails is that the pipe would have to cross under the frame rails to get there.... which would make the exhaust the first thing to hit in a low clearance issue....
Well, that just depends on where you cross it over the rails and what you're doing with the truck. I only have a 2wd truck, and with only lifting it a couple inches eventually, I won't be doing anything that's going to tear up the underside of my truck.
I dunno, I guess I'll just have to be patient and see what it really looks like under my own truck. I know it's not any kind of squeeze, but it's something to think about.
i got 3 tanks on mine but 2 are outside the frame rails with the filler caps in the wheel wells and one behind the seat,so i couldnt run pipes out side the frame. mine just come off the headers (2 1/5")strait back to a set of thrush turbo's then out threw some nice tail pipes that exit out the sides just behind the rear wheels.
Hm... I want to say that's how that old Chev was set up, too... that has to be it! The exhaust was inside the framerails and tucked up underneath well enough. Ah well. I'm just kinda looking to make it as neat of an install as possible, and my fuel tank will probably get replaced later by something that'll span the frame behind and maybe above the axle.
I'm still looking for an answer on the stainless exhaust, though.
My '68 has the exhaust run outside the frame rails. It was done that way years ago and where it crosses under the frame rails it has never caused a problem, though I don't go booney-bashing with it or anything. The point where it crosses under is just behind the strut rod mounts. It could have been tucked up in a little tighter than it was, but there's no evidence that it's ever hit anything.
