Howdy all,
I just purchased a 1995 Bronco with the 5.0 in it. It is completely stock. Not sure of the gearing, but with 31's it turns about 2,000 RPM @ 65 MPH. I am using it for transportation so fuel economy is high on my list. What power upgrades should I consider while trying to keep decent fuel economy? I would be happy with 14-15 MPG. Also, the check engine light intermittently flashes. How do I pull the code? Is there a reference guide or a code list? Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.
Welcome FTE. We love our Broncos but they weigh around 5,200 pounds and have the aerodynamics of a cinder block so 12-15 mpg on the 302 is good. First, imagine there is an egg under the accellerator and the brake pedals and drive accordingly. High speed really suck the gas. I found it easier to buy a thirty something dollar code reader and keep it in the Bronco. Here is how to pull codes with a paper clip...http://fordfuelinjection.com/?p=13 and here are the codes...http://fordfuelinjection.com/Of course cap, rotor, wires and setting timing at 12 btdc. or what your engine likes best. Copper plugs from Motorcrart or Autolight are popular. 5W-30 or 10W-30 oil. Check for vacuum leaks with a propane torch (unlit), or carb. cleaner but have a fire extinguisher beside you. My 5.8 turns 2,100-2,200 rpm at 70 mph with 235-75's. Most came with 3.55 ratios. Be careful with exhaust mods as some restriction is needed for torque and the 302 does not have any to spare. The biggest improvement on mine came at about 172K by replacing the timing chain set which I did myself.

Everything said above is pretty good. i wouldnt run 5w30 as its meant for newer motors and not what we run in the broncos so 10-30 is just fine.
Long tube headers, custome y pipe, hi flow cat and 2.5-3" exhaust from the cat back with your choice of muffler is a good combo that will help mpg depending on how your right foot behaves. keep the tire pressure up properly and make sure the front end is aligned and all the ball joints, tie rods and front bearings are in good shape.
