Camshaft HELP!

I purchased a 1966 Ford with a 352 motor that is all souped up. I would like to put a stock / milder cam in but dont understand all the numbers and what they mean... Where do I look or can someone help?

If you want a milder cam try something with around 216 degrees duration @.050 and around .510 lift.

Camshaft HELP!

Your best bet is to call a camshaft manufacturer's tech line. Tell them what you have (vehicle, motor, intake, exhaust, tranny, rear end ratio, etc.) and what your objectives are. They'll recommend a cam that is right for your application. Competition Cams is here in Memphis (a mile from my office), and makes an excellent selection of cams for the FE motors. Their toll free number is 800-999-0853.

You can also email most of them. You can email Comp Cams' technical advisors at camhelp@compcams.com.

Most cam manufacturers do offer camshafts that match or come close to the factory stock cams. Comp Cams "OEM" cam for the FE is their grind number 252H. It has an advertised duration (valve lift to valve close) of 252 degrees, and a duration of 206 degrees at .050 lift. Max lift is .468".

You could add a little more performance without sacrificing mileage and low-rpm streetability by moving to a "dual pattern" cam (longer exhaust duration than intake duration). Comp Cams grind numbers 255DEH and 265DEH would be good choices.

Crane also makes a few mild cams. I believe the "Energizer" cams are just a step above stock.

I'll echo the above advice and add: I liked Comp's reputation, so I called for their advice and followed it. I bought the 265 DEH for my 9:1 390 4V w/cast manifolds, 2.5 pipes, stick and 3.73. I'm very pleased, and happy that I avoided the temptation to go for the cool-sounding choppy idle of a bigger cam.
