Hey all,
I have a 1988 bronco 2 4wd with an engine problem. When I start it, it will run ok for a second and then spit and sputter then die...I checked the fuel pump and filters and they are good....I did notice before this that I would loose power briefly while driving...I need this truck to get to work and would like to fix myself but I'm not sure what to fix..lol If anyone can help I would be very greatful...........thanks
Kinda sounds like the tfi module located behind and under the back of the distributer, could be other stuff too. But in my experience with these guys it is usually the tfi. sometimes they just wont try to start at all, others probs have been crazy misses even after a complete tune up. you will need the little special socket tool to take the two small screws out you can do this with the distributer in. the tfi plugs up into the bottom and needs to have a coat of dielectric grease upon install. carefull not to bend the terminals up putting it in. Good luck
Does the rough idle/sputtering only occur when you cold start the truck? Does it go away once the truck is warmed up?
I've recently replaced the fuel injectors on my 87' 2.9V6 and I had the same problem. So far (3 months) the new injectors have almost completely gotten rid of the problem (rough idle on start). After the replacement I did have a high idle (2000rpm), but a replacement of the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve corrected that problem.
