Thanks Ross, but it must be opening correctly because the battery stays charged up for up to two weeks sometimes without being used. My output at idle (it is a little high) is about 7.1 v. I used to leave the idle lower, but the car was stalling when I would step on the brake. I guess the ignition system may have been starved for voltage with too little coming out of the regulator. 
So, I idled it up a little and the problem went away.
