My 86 F250 460 keeps burning the carb. gasket at the passenger side rear corner just above the EGR valve creating a bad vacuum leak. Does anyone have an idea where all that heat is coming from? I know there is alot of heat involved with the EGR but to Burn the gasket like that? Any info would be great
What kind of gasket are you using? The gasket between the carb and the spacer should be about 1/4 thick, with grommets where the carb studs go through. It acts as a heat sink. The gasket between the spacer and the manifold is supposed to be a thick steel-woven type. The paper-thin gaskets that come in rebuild kits are junk.
I'm using the gasket you mentioned, it gets so hot there it melted the grommet the last time, like I said I know it gets hot from the EGR but that seams to be extreme to me?
No, it should not get that hot. By 86, all spacer plates should have been made from cast iron. I would inspect the spacer plate to make sure it's not cracked or warped. Otherwise I would suspect the engine is running too hot; perhaps the timing is off? Something is make your exhuast hotter than it should be.
Thanks for your responce,the truck runs right at 200 deg. I've put a mech. temp gauge on it instead of the factory one.I'll check the spacer plate as I have the carb. off now, I didnt want to put back together until I got some idea what was going on.

Been there, done that. I have used every gasket combination and the best gaskets are Felpro for the carb to EGR spacer and Napa for the EGR spacer to manifold. Applying a thin film of anti-sieze compound to all surfaces will make it last a long time.
The gasket between the EGR an manifold are made for heat. They are a special gasket. They are not the 1/4 gasket. I have an 86 F250 4x4 460. The heat comes from the EGR. The exhaust gases are routed through it. An EGR EMISSION GAS RECIRCULATION VALVE. It allows for reburning exhaust gases.
