Can anyone tell me what realistic fuel mileage they are getting on the 05 deisel Excursions?
I have a 05 4x4 E.B. 3:73s and am very disappointed in the mileage. The best that I can get is 15.7mpg running 2000rpm @72mph. The truck is bone stock and I do not drive it hard (no jack rabbit starts or stops) 27478 miles on it. I do have a Super Chips flash paq that I have run on it. I see no mileage improvements but it does turn it into a rocket. I have a 02 Ex 7.3 and it will get 200-250 miles more to the tank. In addition the turbo lag is ridiculous on the 05.
Any improvements without costing a fortune that actually work on the 05? Egr bypass or converter delete.
From what I heard the mileage get better when your mile go up.it only has 27,000 still needs to be broke in. My 05 ex has 50,000 on it and mileage is 17 at 70. P.S. you might ask this question in 6.0 diesel forums.
I am only getting 14.7 on mine. I have an 05 4x4 EB also but only have 14K. I don't drive it on the highway much but I would be happy with the 15+ you are getting. It will take me another 2 years to get to 20+k miles on it. I guess it will be broken in when on it's 5th birthday.
mods are listed below but I'm getting ~18 mpg (hand calc) @ 80 and ~20 mpg according to the comp @38k miles. comp goes to ~22 mpg when I'm at 70 but I've never hand calc'd for a long trip...I couldn't handle going 70 for a long time. to get the best mpg you have to stay around 2k rpm and it helps when the engine get broken in a little.
I thought the turbo lag was awful in my truck as well. Turned out the vanes in the turbo were stuck. That also gave me cruddy mileage. I was getting an indicated 10mpg with a lift and 35's. Fix the turbo and now I get 14-16mpg. I'm actually happy with that.
its a desiel its not going to get good mileage till its fully broken in, which is around 80-100K, and any thing over or close to 2000 rpms the milage drops alot, 15.7 sounds right for that really low milege you have on your powerstroke wait till you hit around 50K then the mpg will increse more and more
Thanks for the input. I was wishing that there was something wrong with my 05 but it sounds like it is in the ball park. The bad thing is that the 05 is 1/2 truck as my 02 Excursion. I have 48322 miles on my 02 all highway. I can get 20 mpg and as stated additional 200 miles to the gallon with out the terrible turbo lag.

Thanks for the reply. The bad/good thing is that I have a 02 Excursion diesel that gets 3mpgs better with out the terrible turbo lag as my 05. I have been driving diesels for 20 years and with all of the hype from FORD about the 6.0 I am dissapointed in this engine and truck. In addition the 05 has spent alot time in the dealership 2 months total this year. My 02 only one day when dealership put in an alternator and batteries two days out of warranty. The bad thing is that I am benchmarking 05 against the 02. The 05 is obviously loosing. Thanks again great input

I could live with your results. But the 15.7mpg to the 20mpg that my 02 gets is ridiculous. If can get your results and keep this truck out of the dealership while it is under warranty I will keep it. If not the 05 is getting kicked off the island. Thanks for the info.
