My wifes '05 Excursion is a 2WD with a 5.4L and a 4R70 automatic. It has 4.10 gears in the rear end. It is not used for towing as it is her daily driver/kid hauler and I have an F250 diesel that is used to for our towing needs. I am considering a swap to 3.73 gears in an effort to increase the fuel mileage. Ford actually sells a 3.73 gear kit for this vehicle, so I assume that this ratio was an option. She is getting about 10-11 mpg now. Also, does anyone have any other mileage improvement suggestions ie., intakes, exhausts, programmers, etc.. I realize that this is a large vehicle and it is never going to be the most effecient vehicle on the road but I feel that 14-16mpg is a reasonable goal. Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
Just so you know, the tranny you have is the 4R100 not the 4R70.
I would advise against dropping to the 3.73s unless your wife spends all her time on the highway. The amount of fuel she will use in town will actually increase with 3.73s since she'll need to press the pedal down further to get the truck moving.
However, if you decide to swap them out (and it is quite easy..relatively speaking) I'll buy the 4.10s of you. I'd like them for my V10 2wd.
As for fuel savings, what are your tire pressures?
Monsta...a question for you, please. I ordered my truck with the 3:73 LSD. I am mostly around town, but do a good amount of highway and tow about 7000 pounds in the summer months.
How much worse would you expect highway mileage to be with 4:10s, and how much would the driveability change? Maybe I should have considered that 4:10 option when I ordered my truck.
Monsta, Thanks for the quick reply. If I do change the gears I will consider selling the 4.10's to you, if the 3.73's work out. The Service department at the dealership told me, when we bought this Excursion, that it had a 4R70 tranny not a 4R100. I specifically asked about this as I was worried about having the same tranny problems that the 4R100 in my truck had. My wife does about 50/50 highway campared to city driving and she definitely does not have a lead foot. I assume that the 4.10's are used because of the small engine and the assumption that a vehicle like this will be used for towing. Does anyone out there have a 5.4 Excursion with higher gearing than 4.10? If so, what kind of mileage are you getting? By the way, tire pressures are set at the door sticker recommendations.
I really don't think that 4.10s will impact mileage too much. The difference between the two ratios is about 10%. You certainly won't lose that much mileage as guys out there with 4.30s report the same mileage as me (3.73 V10) in most situations. It takes less go pedal to get things moving and keeping them going. Sure it turns theengine faster but we all know that 2K is the V10s sweet spot anyway.
Do you have a 5.4L? That's the only engine you can get that ratio with from the factory. It also has that 2K sweet spot.
You WILL have more power to the ground (as they say) and will do better towing.
Ford doesn't really make "kits" per se but you can buy complete R&P w/ the Trac-Lok directly from your parts department.
www.discountfordparts.com has them for around $300. A fantastic deal on OEM gears if you ask me. Sure the OEM LSD is marginal at best but only in real rough stuff. Set up properly, it works as a LSD should. For streeting type guys who only really need in snow, wet grass etc. etc. it does just fine.

They lied...or were horribly misinformed.
What problems did you have with your last 4R100?

4R100 front pump grenaded while towing our trailer. Truck was bought used with 70,000 miles on it and I later discovered that it had a Ford remanufactured tranny in it. It is now on its third tranny (at least) which was built by ATO Transmissions in Rancho Cordova, CA since Ford obviously couldn't do it. Have had absolutely no problems since!!
I do not know if the price quoted by Jackson Ford includes the limited slip. Does a 2WD even have LS? And it is entirely possible that they misinformed me. Wouldn't be the 1st time a dealership has been wrong.
