Just joined the forum and happy to find all the info here
I am in the process of rebuilding a 6.9 and it's in need of cylinder honing. I wanted to ask if anyone had any tips on removal and installation of the oil nozzles at the bottom of the cylinders. The only info I have found is that you can remove them with "vise-grips" and a pry bar and Ford has a special tool for installation. Anyone out there have any other way of dealing with these?
i did not know these had piston coolers, cool. i plan on opening mine up and replacing the bearign and rings next summer or so. im definatly interested in how to remove em then.
you dont need to remove them for honing , you just have to be careful and not bend them ,once removed i dont recommend reinstalling them they should always be replaced with new due to the tube being sized by the block and will not have the tight fit as a new one
Thx FTT.... I actually got hooked up with a long time wrench at the local IH dealer and he is going to come over and install the new ones and line them up right for me.
He recommended a slide hammer "dent-puller" and vise-grips to remove them. Worked like a charm, I just welded 2 nuts together then welded those to the screw in the handle of the vise-grips and tapped them out.
I see what you are saying about them being sized to the block. I noticed that as soon as I pulled the first one.
If it is a block that has then pressed in then do your best to leave them alone. They can be ugly getting them back in without the right tool. You can hone the cylinders with them in.
Catfish, The guy at the IH dealer has the right install tool and has the "know how" to align them right, so I think I'm covered there. I have a stone type hone. I plan on just degalzing with #220 grit then plataue honing them with #400 grit.
