Weight Distribution questions?

Can you tell me what the differences are between the round bar style and the Trunnion Style weight distirbution hitches are? Why are there different style and what does one offer that the other doesn't?

This will be my first Weight distribution hitch and I want to make sure I am getting the correct one.

I have read about the Arrow being the king of all things but I am NOT going to spend 3g's on something I pull maybe 5-10 times a year.

Can't say about the other types since I never used them, maybe I am missing out. But I do have a fair amount of miles(SWAG 10K-20K?? Miles) with my EazLift round bar style WD hitch.

My rig is a 94 F250 Supercab longbed and I tow an 8,000# travel trailer. I have driven thru rough dirt roads in the mountains including thru chunky snow etc with no problem. I also drive faster than I should on the interstates and have no problem.

There is a definite difference in the amount of wrestling the wheel when you drive without WD and with so I definitely recommend WD hitches. You will be less tired after a long drive.

The other ones are probably good, I just don't know.

I have a round bar style WD hitch as well. Some of my components are Eaz-Lift and other parts are Reese. My experience with the trunnion style ones is rather limited. I suppose one advantage of round bar is that there aren't any pins to get lost...you just snap the bars into the bottom of the ball mount, set the tension, and go.

One difference is the weight rating. The trunion style bars will typically have a higher weight rating. So the tongue weight of your trailer would suggest the type of bar you may want to use.

Reese triunion style also adds sway control.

You can get sway control with the ropund bar types too. Very easy to add and about $100+. The one on my trailer is an EazLift friction type.

Seems to work well for me, definiteely helps when passing big trucks and on windy days.

In snow or wet conditions, the instruction manual says not to use the antisway or at least decreases the pressure.

Other brands, don't know.

Good Luck,

I used to have a trunion system with my enclosed trailer. Sold it with the trailer. Got the round bar system with my current trailer. I can't really see a difference, but agree the trunion probably will deal with more weight. I have a 1500 lbs round bar currently.

Six of one, half dozen other. My trunion didn't have pins, fold over keepers that were part of the hitch head, so nothing to loose.

To rephrase this better, the Reese triunion style has sway control built in.

Since you are only towing 5-7 times a year, I would suggest the equal-iz-er hitch. This has a very effective weight distribution systems as well as sway control......As you say, the Hensley Arrow is the cadilac of all hitch systems, but are very very pricey.

The Reese Dual Cam is also a good hitch, but somewhat overkill for no more often than you tow..................As a tower of travel trailers for many years, I would suggest you stay with one of the three mentioned.

Happy trails!!!!!
