One little trick you might want to try is go to the auto supply and look in the section that carries the rolls of vinyl pinstripping tape they make chrome tape in different widths, find the right width and stick it down . Looks close to the original, if they dont have it most stores wiil order in for you. Good luck
Already tried that. It won't bend around a corner (edge) and lay flat. It even said on the package, but I tried it anyway. They were right. It did produce the look I'm looking for until it peeled up.

Maybe you could try that aluminum ducting tape, its pretty shiny and thinner than pinstriping tape I would think. To get it flat over a corner or something, you can cut small notches along the edge of the tape to make it bend easier. This would probably take some effort to look good though. You can also try http://www.caswellplating.com, they have a lot of plating/powdercoating stuff, and conductive paint so that you can plate plastic parts. They also have a forum with lots of info.
you could try a craft store or look online for the leafing, it comes in different finishes, gold, silver, copper. I don't know if there is one like chrome. You have to get the liquid stuff that makes the leafing adhere and brush it on where you want the leafing. When your done, you will have to put some sort of sealer on it.
There are a few new chrome paints out there that LOOK like chrome! Mirra Chrome is one made by ALSA. Kinda pricey, bout 50 bucks an ounce but they are the closest thing to chrome (in a bottle) that you're going to find.
Now that is chrome! Back to gold leafing, it is a finicky process to get just right. The one time I tried it, it didn't provide the look I wanted and did not shine at all.
