platinum coated center caps (apparently)

bought some Chrome F-150 rims for my car hauler trailer..add a little bling..

the center caps are plastic with simulated chrome which is peeling and just yucky... euwwww.

I'm looking on line for some but evidently all of them are platinum for the prices they are asking... 50 bucks each and up... anyone got any that fit a 15' RIM and have three screws that screw them to the rim around the bolt hole circle that would not require a 2nd on the house ... here's a sample pic of what I'm looking for but will take anything that fits and mounts the same way... OR tell me how to get the chrome simulation off without destroying the ABS plastic underneath and I'll just paint them...

I just checked eBay, there's a few for less than $20 apiece. One seller has 9 new ones

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ford-Ranger-Truck-Explorer-Bronco-II-Wheel-Center-Cap-HUBCAP-1991-1992-1993-1994-/321081217895?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4ac1ee9367&vxp=mtr
There are others.

Genuine Ford, you can tell by the 3 holes within the bolt circle used for the anchors and screws. Styled wheels introduced in 1977 for E/F100/150's, 1978 for Bronco's.

Similar chromed plastic, chromed steel and black plastic caps (Ford called 'em ornaments) used 1977/96 on F100/150's, E100/150's, 1978/96 Bronco's...all with 5.50" bolt circle wheels.

Caveat Emptor: Let the buyer beware! Rangers, Bronco II's, Explorers, Aerostars used similar caps, but have 4.50" bolt circle wheels.

What happens: The anchors are hand pressed into the wheels, then the self tapping chrome screws thread into the anchors.

But after being R&R'd a coupla times, the anchors no longer expand properly. When rounding a corner, the hubcaps fly off, taking the screws and anchors along with them. Not pleasant!

Make sure to buy new anchors, otherwise...before too long, you can kiss the little darlin's good bye. Sold a gazillion of these hubcaps back then, thanks to the anchors.

John,
Can you just replace the plastic center cap? I hope so, my son just lost on off of his truck last week

The center caps were sold separate, so were the anchors and screws. But the caps are as obsolete as the dodo bird and some types had an MSRP of over 100 bucks EACH!

The anchors, screws were available from Ford the last time I looked. Anchors used with steel wheels different than used with aluminum wheels.

Thanks Bill
Mine are steel wheels on a 1990 F-150. I bought this truck for my son when he graduated highschool last year.
