E40D v 4R100

What is the differance between these two tranny's?? I read the other day that when doing an tranny overhaul on the E40D to use the torque converter for the 4R100.

Is the 4R100 a sturdier tranny and/or are they innerchangable to a '97 PSD?

Torque converter has a lower stall to my recalection. The 4r100 converter works fine with no modifications unless you install it with the 4r100.

The tranies are essentialy the same, their are suddle differences for extra sensors on the 4r100, the 4r100 will go into our OBS trucks but the e4od will not work on the 98 and up. To make the 4r100 work this is some thing you have to change in the trans. for the converter lockup.

IMO going to a 4r is not enough of an upgrade to justify the cost. Get a built E4 and you will be much farther ahead of a stock 4R

I agree, but if the stock e4od is pouched and your getting a 2nd hand used one vs. rebuilding the original, the 4r100 would be a good upgrade for the cost on a stock truck, for performance upgrade, not worth the money like tim said.

My opinion of course

i dont think getting a used tranny is worth the potential headache. if you get a "really good deal" odds are its for a reason, most of them i come up with arent good.
as for the differences, the valve body is different, the torque converter, the planetaries are different, thats the main ones, a few suttle otheres but not worth any time in converting in my book, if yours goes, rebuild it with thee updated parts and be on your way

I'm just looking at different circumstances, here I could get a used trans already pulled out (4r100) with 3 1/2 month unlimited milage warrenty for $900 and they ussually have the milage on file to that transmission so shopping around for one with under 100,000kms(60,000miles) and finding one is most definitly possible. Or the transmissions that get sent from our repair shop to a transmission shop is running anywhere between $1900-2600 for repair and comes with a 12 month unlimited milage warrenty. Just saying that it is worth an option depending on the condition of the exsisting truck if it would be worth while rebuilding or buying used. If I baught used I would go for the 4r100 before an e4od.

The question think he wants to know is to use or not use the converter from the 4r100, I'm not using a 4r100 converter but it would be a little better then the e4od converter for a stock application.

As a performance upgrade, its not worth it i'll say again.

The concern is mostly PWM system for the TC (4R). You really do not want it. You would end up converting it to non PWM (E4).

i would stick with the e4od converter since it has the higher stall
