Now here's a concern I haven't seen addressed here: at high speeds (75 +) the trailing edge of my hood flutters up and down quite a bit. The edges where the hinges are are fine, but the middle moves up and down to the point that I was worried the whole thing might fly off. It's especially bad when passing semis or in certain crosswinds. Below 70 mph it goes away except for very windy conditions (very windy = wind 35 mph+). Anyone else have this issue? Oh, I do have a deflector on the hood, if it makes a difference.
Thanks!
There are two threaded shafts at the ends of the engine compartment with rubber tops that should contact the bottom of the hood when it is closed. I would make sure they are in contact with the hood when it is closed. If they are not, they might be causing the vibration.
Snowdog79,
I had the EXACT same issue on my 2004 F-150. I too have a bug deflector...
Basically, the bug deflector pushes the air (which would normally press down on your hood) up over your hood. The air coming from under the hood is pressing up against your hood causing the fluttering issue.....
Here is how you fix it:
TSB 04-18-8 HOOD FLUTTER AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS
ISSUE:
Some 2004 F-150 may exibit hood movement at the back of the hood due to high air turbulence, while driving at highway speeds. This condition may be amplified by the installation of an accessory bugshield and may be more pronounced when passing an on-coming vehicle on a two lane road.
ACTION:
Refer to the following Service Procedure.
SERVICE PROCEDURE:
Confirm that the hood is flush with the front fenders at each front corner. If the hood is under-flush, adjust the hood stops to raise the hood flush with the tops of the front fenders. Check the amount of drag at the rear hood to cowl seal with a piece of paper. Place a piece of paper between the seal and hood, close the hood and then slowly pull the paper out. It there is sufficient drag, indicating good seal to hood contact, return the vehicle to the customer.
If there is little to no drag, obtain locally a piece of fuel hose 147cm long & 11mm diameter (58" long & 3/16" diameter). Lube the hose with a soap-based solution and install the hose inside the hood seal bulb.
I did the above...ie worked a 58" length rubber hose 3/16" dia inside of the hood seal. The rubber hood seal comes off very easily for easier installion of the 3/16" hose. Just pull it straight up. After installing the hose inside the hood seal....my hood flutter issue was gone! I kept the bug guard on. No more flutter issues!
My 05 FX4 SCrew does the same exact thing. I have a bug deflector as well. My hood flutterd before I installed the bug deflector. I am going to have to try adding the fuel hose to mine!!
